White House shared bogus misinformation about a Jewish center’s security — then had to delete it

The White House Twitter account on Wednesday deleted a video tweet it had shared containing misinformation about a Jewish community center’s security barrier.

In the video, a series of clips were spliced together to raise alarm about violence arising from the ongoing protests in response to the killing of George Floyd. Though some violence was captured in the videos, most of the clips merely showed piles of bricks with the insinuation that rioters planned to use them for destruction and attacks.

Buzzfeed News reported this week that many of the claims about video and images of bricks circulating during the protests have completely innocuous explanations. One such claim the outlet debunked was an image of bricks in metal crates on a sidewalk. While the narrator of the video showing the crates said, “That don’t look right to me,” BuzzFeed found that they were “security barriers installed to protect a Jewish community building.” Continue reading.
