House Intel postpones enforcement action after DOJ offer to share some Mueller files

The House Intelligence Committee is postponing a vote to enforce a subpoena for Attorney General William Barr after the Justice Department agreed to begin producing some of special counsel Robert Mueller‘s files.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a statement that a committee business meeting Wednesday to vote on what he has described as an “enforcement action” has been canceled and that he expected the Justice Department to begin producing the foreign intelligence and counterintelligence documents by the end of the week.

“The Department of Justice has accepted our offer of a first step towards compliance with our subpoena, and this week will begin turning over to the Committee twelve categories of counterintelligence and foreign intelligence materials as part of an initial rolling production,” Schiff said. “That initial production should be completed by the end of next week.”

Schiff defends hiring from administration as Trump feud deepens

The head of the House Intelligence Committee is defending his decision to hire former administration staffers to serve on the panel, saying it is part of a long tradition to hire from the intelligence community.

Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) offered the remarks amid a deepening feud with President Trump, who earlier in the day tweeted that Schiff was “stealing people who work at the White House” to work on his “witch hunt.”

“We have a long tradition of hiring out of the intelligence community, the National Security Council (NSC),” Schiff said. “And if the president is worried about our hiring any former administration people, maybe he should work on being a better employer.”

On Wednesday, The Daily Beast reported that the incoming Democratic majority on the House Intelligence Committee is planning to hire experts in money laundering and forensic accounting, with the goal of investigating President Donald Trump’s finances.

The committee, which will now be led by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), reportedly plans to investigate Trump’s financial links to Russia. But that is not all they are interested in looking at:

Schiff, a California Democrat, has said publicly and privately that he’s interested in President Donald Trump’s relationship with Deutsche Bank, the German financial giant that has been scorched for its connections to money-laundering. When other lenders were loath to lend money to Trump in the 1990s, Deutsche Bank stepped up and spotted him tons of cash. The president may still owe the bank up to $175 million, according to MarketWatch. Bringing on staffers with expertise in financial crimes would position the committee to pursue those questions.
