DNC on House Vote to End Trump’s Shutdown

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement after the Democratic-led House of Representatives voted to end Donald Trump’s shutdown and reopen the federal government:

“This shutdown should’ve never happened. Democrats offered multiple proposals to avoid it, but Donald Trump decided to throw a tantrum that would be embarrassing even for a toddler. And now hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been left without a paycheck, federal agencies have lost their resources, and millions of American families have lost access to critical benefits and services.

“Tonight’s vote marks the dawn of a new era of leadership in the House of Representatives. The Senate GOP and President Trump should end their reckless shutdown and pass this bipartisan legislation, which includes measures they’ve already supported. The American people have made their voices clear: They want to fund and reopen the government. The time for games is over.”

Trump admits to Schumer he shut down the government to avoid looking ‘foolish’: report

President Donald Trump is showing no signs of relenting in his decision to shut down the federal government

President Donald Trump is showing no signs of relenting in his decision to shut down the federal government until Congress is bullied into throwing out the bipartisan funding resolution that passed the Senate two weeks ago and sending him one that includes funding for a border wall.

It is clear that Trump is thoroughly invested in getting his way — and not just because he wants to spend billions on a racist folly that would do nothing for border security. But also because Trump himself seems to consider it a matter of personal appearances.

CNN reports that at a White House meeting with congressional leaders, the president all but admitted to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that he would be personally embarrassed if the government reopened without the money he wants for a wall:

Trump Admin Lies To Prolong Manufactured Crisis At The Border

Trump shut down the government over a manufactured crisis at the border. The Trump administration has continued to lie and spread misleading data to try and justify why they are keeping hundreds of thousands of workers from getting their paychecks.

Sarah Sanders was fact checked on Fox News Sunday for citing misleading data to falsely claim that terrorists are crossing the southern border.

Sarah Sanders: “We know that roughly nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally, and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is southern border.”

Fox News’ Chris Wallace: “But they’re not coming across the southern border, Sarah, they’re coming and they’re being stopped at airports.” Continue reading “Trump Admin Lies To Prolong Manufactured Crisis At The Border”

DAY 17: Thousands Face Eviction, Air Travel Less Secure From Trump Shutdown

With the Trump Shutdown in its 17th day, more Americans across the country are hurting. Thousands of families who rely on HUD for affordable housing could face eviction; our airports are less secure; millions of Americans could soon see reductions in food assistance; and national parks face years of long-term damage. Here’s the latest:

The Trump Shutdown is hurting low-income families and the elderly who rely on HUD for subsidized housing.

NBC News: “As the shutdown drags on, it’s jeopardizing the welfare of those who live in HUD-subsidized housing, including low-income families and the elderly.”

Thousands of tenants could be evicted from their homes as a result of the Trump Shutdown.

Washington Post: “The Department of Housing and Urban Development sent letters to 1,500 landlords Friday as part of a last-minute effort to prevent the eviction of thousands of tenants. A lot of those tenants live in units covered by a HUD program that many agency officials didn’t realize had expired on Jan. 1 and that they are now unable to renew.” Continue reading “DAY 17: Thousands Face Eviction, Air Travel Less Secure From Trump Shutdown”

Washington Post: While federal workers go without pay, senior Trump administration officials are poised to get $10,000 raises.

While hundreds of thousands of workers go without pay because of the Trump Shutdown, and after Trump cancelled a scheduled pay raise for career civil servants, Trump’s senior administration officials, including Mike Pence, are set to receive $10,000 pay raises. This is outrageous, and makes it abundantly clear that Trump does not care about American workers.

While many federal workers go without pay and the government is partially shut down, hundreds of senior Trump political appointees are poised to receive annual raises of about $10,000 a year.

The pay raises for cabinet secretaries, deputy secretaries, top administrators and even Vice President Mike Pence are scheduled to go into effect beginning Jan. 5 without legislation to stop them, according to documents issued by the Office of Personnel Management and experts in federal pay. Trump Shutdown Hurts Workers And Small Businesses

The Trump Shutdown has left hundreds of thousands of workers without a paycheck, and many will not receive any pay at all for missed workdays. As the Trump Shutdown stretches on, it is now hurting the private sector and could have even more far-reaching consequences for Americans across the country.

The Trump Shutdown has gone on so long that workers likely won’t see a paycheck for at least another few weeks.

CBS News: “Federal workers won’t see a check until Jan. 25 at the earliest”

Thousands of workers whose pay comes from federal contracts may not recuperate any lost pay from the Trump Shutdown.

ABC News: “While hundreds of thousands of federal workers will have to wait for back pay after the government shutdown ends, thousands more whose pay comes from federal contracts have little hope of recuperating the pay they lose when the government isn’t operating.” Continue reading “Trump Shutdown Hurts Workers And Small Businesses”

The lies Trump is using to justify his border wall shutdown

Separating fact from fiction.

President Donald Trump rejected compromises from both Democrats and Republicans to re-open the federal government ahead of a border security briefing with Congressional leaders on Wednesday.

Democrats have offered $2.5 billion in border security funding, but because it is half of Trump’s $5 billion demand, it was not accepted. A compromise from some Senate Republicans, which would have given Trump his border wall money while also providing protections to young undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children, also failed to pass the Trump test.

Faced with a federal government shutdown entering into its 12th day, Trump maintained his hardline stance on immigration and request for $5 billion in border wall funding. By deploying fear-mongering tactics and lies about immigration, the president is attempting to gin up his Republican base while simultaneously trying to convince Democrats of the wall’s necessity.

Trump Said He’s Proud Of The Shutdown And It Could Last Years

In rambling remarks today, Trump once again doubled down on his government shutdown and threatened to keep it going for years. Hundreds of thousands of workers are hurting and remain unsure of when their next paycheck will come, yet Trump is proud to keep this shutdown going.

Trump said he would keep the government shut down for YEARS.

TRUMP: “Absolutely I said that.”

Trump said he is proud of the government shutdown.

TRUMP: “I’m very proud of doing what I’m doing.”

Editorial Boards Call for an End to the Trump Shutdown

Editorial boards across the country have spoken: Donald Trump is responsible for this disastrous government shutdown and are demanding he finally take some responsibility and work with congressional Democrats. See below:

MassLive: “Trump made this problem. The outgoing Congress was well on the way toward passing a spending plan to keep the government fully functioning — until the president, bowing to pressure from the right-wing rabble-rousers, the radio talk show bloviators, refused to go along with the plan.”

The Press Democrat: “President Donald Trump is responsible for the shutdown. The author of the ‘The Art of the Deal’ is insisting on $5 billion for a wall along the southern border and, so far, has refused to negotiate. He couldn’t get the money when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress. And, as of Thursday, the Democrats are the majority party in the House of Representatives.” Continue reading “Editorial Boards Call for an End to the Trump Shutdown”

White House Targets Pelosi Even After Trump‘s ‘Proud’ Shutdown Vow

Democratic aides taken aback over White House claims of recent offers to talk

The White House is waging a public relations campaign aimed at shifting blame for what could be a lengthy government shutdown to the top House Democrat and away from President Donald Trump even though he just days ago he said he was “proud” to single-handily own it.

Trump and the top two Democratic leaders engaged in a televised war of words on December 11 in an Oval Office confrontation during which the president took ownership of the coming partial shutdown. The president told them he would be “proud to shut down the government for border security,” adding he would “take the mantle” before roaring this: “I’m not going to blame you for it.”

But Trump is now blaming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat expected to again become speaker next week. The calculation is a political one: Pelosi was one of Trump’s favorite foils in his 2016 presidential campaign and as he hit the trail for November’s midterm elections. And he and his aides made clear she will be a focal point of his expected 2020 re-election campaign.
