WORKERS SPEAK OUT: If Trump Think He Knows How Workers Think, ‘He Is Out Of His Mind’

Yesterday Trump once again claimed that federal workers support his shutdown. That couldn’t be further from the truth. As one worker put it, “The president was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. If he thinks he knows how ‘those people’ think, he is out of his mind.”

Here are real stories of workers hurt by the Trump Shutdown:

“The president was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. If he thinks he knows how ‘those people’ think, he is out of his mind.” – Federal worker

“I just don’t feel that he has to hold the country hostage, I don’t buy it. That that has to happen, that he has to hold the country hostage to get this at my expense. At all of our expenses.” – Federal worker Continue reading “WORKERS SPEAK OUT: If Trump Think He Knows How Workers Think, ‘He Is Out Of His Mind’”

Trump Can’t Justify His Shutdown — Visiting The Border Won’t Help

Today, Trump plans to visit the border in McAllen, Texas. This is nothing more than another political stunt to try to justify his government shutdown. The reality is that Trump’s wall is ineffective, expensive, and unpopular.

Americans overwhelmingly oppose Trump’s wall.

CNN: “Americans have been consistently opposed to a border wall. Before the shutdown, they opposed it by about a 10-to-20 point margin. There’s no sign that’s changed in the latest polling.”

The mayor of McAllen, Texas opposes Trump’s wall.

McAllen, Texas mayor: “A wall is really not the effective way to protect our border.” Continue reading “Trump Can’t Justify His Shutdown — Visiting The Border Won’t Help”

Trump Throws Another Temper Tantrum, Continues Shutdown

Trump is to blame for the government shutdown. And today, he proved yet again that he is the one standing in the way of a bipartisan deal to reopen the government.

Instead of accepting a bipartisan deal to reopen the government, Trump threw yet another temper tantrum and continued his shutdown.

Schumer: “”Again we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn’t get his way.”

Trump: “Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!” Continue reading “Trump Throws Another Temper Tantrum, Continues Shutdown”

Trump administration flocks to Fox to recycle discredited statistic about terrorists crossing the southern border

The Trump administration drew media criticism in February for a misleading claim that 10 terrorists were intercepted crossing the U.S.-Mexico border each day in 2017. The claim has now resurfaced as “almost 4,000 terrorists” throughout 2018. It is still misleading.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on the January 4 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends to defend President Donald Trump’s stance on the ongoing government shutdown. She told the hosts that a border wall is needed because “last year alone, there were nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists” arrested along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump’s idea to declare national emergency raises legality questions B

Lawmakers in both parties on Sunday rejected the prospect of President Trump solving the ongoing budget impasse by skirting Congress to declare a “national emergency,” with several Democrats raising doubts over the legality of the idea.

“I don’t know what he’s basing this on, but he’s faced so many lawsuits when he ignores the law and ignores tradition and precedent, and just goes forward without any concern,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” addressing Trump’s threat to declare a national emergency in order to build a border wall.

“He’ll face a challenge, I’m sure if he oversteps what the law requires when it comes to his responsibility as commander in chief,” Durbin added.

DAY 19: Workers Won’t Get Paid, Families Are Hurting From The Trump Shutdown

As the Trump Shutdown enters its 19th day, Americans across the country continue to be affected. Workers will miss their next paycheck; families could lose their homes; small businesses are losing revenue; and more. Here’s the latest:

The Trump Shutdown has gone on so long that workers are now officially missing their next paycheck.

CNN: “If a deal isn’t struck to end the shutdown by midnight, the government won’t be able to make its next payroll. That means workers will have to wait until January 26 at the earliest to get their next salary checks.”

Federal contracts for more than 1,000 government-funded properties that house low-income renters have already expired as a result of the Trump Shutdown.

NBC News: “Federal contracts for more than 1,000 government-funded properties that house low-income renters have already expired as a result of the government shutdown, which could delay critical repairs and place poor families at risk of eviction, advocates and landlords say.” Continue reading “DAY 19: Workers Won’t Get Paid, Families Are Hurting From The Trump Shutdown”

Opposition To The Trump Shutdown Grows

Opposition continues to grow as the Trump Shutdown enters its 19th day. A majority of Americans already oppose the government shutdown, and now Trump is losing support within his own party.

A majority of Americans oppose the Trump Shutdown and a growing number blame Trump for shutting down the government.

Politico: “Nearly two-thirds, 65 percent, say the president shouldn’t shut down the government to achieve his policy goals, while only 22 percent say a temporary shutdown is acceptable to change policy.”

Reuters: “A growing proportion of Americans blame President Donald Trump for a partial government shutdown that will cut off paychecks to federal workers this week, though Republicans mostly support his refusal to approve a budget without taxpayer dollars for the U.S.-Mexico border wall, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.” Continue reading “Opposition To The Trump Shutdown Grows”

The Border Wall: What Has Trump Built So Far?

Donald Trump’s shutdown of the federal government is hinged on his demand for border wall funding.  Earlier this month, he stated that he’s already built a portion of the wall — even though there has been no funding given (even during the Republican-controlled Congress and there have been no federal contracts granted.

CNN — President Donald Trump is taking his case to the American people over why they should back him in the partial government shutdown.

His primetime address on Tuesday will be about the “Humanitarian and National Security crisis on our Southern Border,” he tweeted. But Trump is facing an uphill climb: polls show a majority of Americans blame him and Republicans for the shutdowns, and the majority have also consistently been opposed to his idea of a border wall with Mexico.

The average of polls taken since the shutdown began indicate that Americans are blaming Republicans for the shutdown. In the average, about 50% think Trump is most to blame, 35% think congressional Democrats are most to blame and about 5% think congressional Republicans are most to blame.

Several Minnesota delegation members to donate shutdown pay

Several members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation said they will donate their pay to charity during the partial federal government shutdown.

Reps. Pete Stauber, a Republican, and Angie Craig, a Democrat, said Monday they would donate their salaries during the shutdown .

Stauber says he believes it isn’t right for members of Congress to be paid “while parts of the federal government remain shut down and thousands of federal worker are furloughed.” He plans to donate his pay to the Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs in Duluth. Craig says she’ll donate her salary to the Eagan Open Door Pantry and Wabasha Food Shelf .
