Sharply criticized for his failure to immediately condemn racist protesters after last year’s unrest in Charlottesville, President Trump this year tried to get out ahead of the issuebefore a planned march in Washington on Sunday.

“The riots in Charlottesville a year ago resulted in senseless death and division,” Trump tweeted Saturday afternoon. “We must come together as a nation. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. Peace to ALL Americans!”

Trump was also criticized after Charlottesville for his equation of the concerns of the white-nationalist groups with those of the people coming out to oppose those groups. In his tweet on Saturday, he did the same thing.

The Memo: Charlottesville anniversary puts Trump and race under microscope

President Trump’s attitude to race is under the microscope at the first anniversary of fatal racist violence in Charlottesville, Va.

Trump’s reference to “some very fine people on both sides” after white supremacists converged on the Virginia city and a counterprotestor, 32-year-old Heather Heyer, was killed, sparked outrage and prompted even many Republicans to distance themselves from him.

The furor did nothing to water down Trump’s willingness to step into sensitive, racially charged areas, however, a fact underlined by the president’s tweets in the past week.

Trump tries to shift conversation back to his culture war against black athletes

The following article by Eric Lutz was posted on the Mic.com website August 10, 2018:

Facing mounting pressure over the Russia investigation, President Donald Trump on Friday kicked off another season of his culture war against football players protesting racial injustice during the pregame national anthem.

As he did in his recent broadside against NBA superstar LeBron James, Trump attacked kneeling NFL players’ intelligence on Twitter, suggesting the mostly black football players are “unable to define” what they’re protesting against.

“The NFL players are at it again — taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the National Anthem,” Trump tweeted early Friday. “Numerous players, from different teams, wanted to show their ‘outrage’ at something that most of them are unable to define.

Laura Ingraham insists she’s not racist, then doubles down on racism

Fox News host Laura Ingraham wants everyone to know that she’s not racist. Unfortunately, she made that clarification by expressing more racism.

Ingraham opened her show Thursday night with some clarifying remarks about her opening monologue Wednesday night. “A message to those who are distorting my views, including all white nationalists and especially one racist freak whose name I will not even mention: You do not have my support,” she said. “You don’t represent my views and you are antithetical to the beliefs I hold dear.”

The “one racist freak” she didn’t name was former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, who praised her remarks as “one of the most important (truthful) monologues in the history of MSM [mainstream media].” It’s not hard to see why he found affinity with the way she had bemoaned how the “massive demographic changes” from immigration were making it “seem like the America that we know and love doesn’t exist anymore,” a claim that bears a strong resemblance with the white supremacist “14 words” slogan.

Historian Traces Laura Ingraham’s Racist Attack on Immigrants: Echoes ‘Racial Citizenship Laws That Took Root in Nazi Germany’

Fox News host Laura Ingraham went on a shocking racist tirade during the Wednesday night broadcast of her show.

“The America we know and love doesn’t exist anymore. Massive demographic changes have been foisted on the American people, and they are changes that none of us ever voted for, and most of us don’t like,” she said. “This is related to both illegal and, in some cases, legal immigration that, of course, progressives love.”

Historian Kevin Kruse delivered a massive and scholarly Twitter response that traced Ingraham’s comments to the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan in the 20th century.

Trump renews attacks on NFL players, calling for suspensions

The following article by Jacqueline Thomsen was posted on the Hill website August 10, 2018:

President Trump on Friday renewed his attacks on NFL players who protest during the national anthem, claiming they “wanted to show their ‘outrage’ at something that most of them are unable to define.”

“The NFL players are at it again — taking a knee when they should be standing proudly for the National Anthem,” Trump tweeted.

“Be happy, be cool! A football game, that fans are paying soooo much money to watch and enjoy, is no place to protest,” he continued. “Most of that money goes to the players anyway.”

Charlottesville Anniversary

We’re one year past the Charlottesville tragedy, and Trump has only further cemented his status as a divider. Rather than work to ease racial tensions and bridge cultural divides in America, the president has made it clear that he prefers to use division as a tool to rally his base.

We have not forgotten that the leader of this country openly and unapologetically defended the alt-right, white supremacists, and Neo-Nazis. Every time Trump insults black leaders, tweets about anthem protests, or uses racist and offensive language, he continues to divide our country.

Democrats have denounced in the strongest possible terms the hatred, bigotry, and racism that led to the senseless murder of an innocent woman at the Charlottesville protests. Democrats believe that there’s no room for this sort of brutality in America.

Democrats believe in a future of inclusion and opportunity for all Americans. Absolutely no one should fear for their safety because of the color of their skin.

Diversity is our nation’s greatest strength, and any actions that make this country less inclusive are inherently un-American. We’ll fight tooth and nail against any attempts to divide our country.

Trump’s Public-Charge Rule Would Threaten Disabled Immigrants’ Health and Safety

In another wave of pointed attacks, the Trump administration has proposed a radical change in immigration policy that would have widespread negative consequences for people with disabilities and their families. Under current law, most immigrants seeking a green card, which grants them authorization to live and work permanently in the United States, must pass an archaic public-charge test. An individual can be designated a public charge if they are determined likely to become primarily dependent on long-term cash assistance from programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or institutionalized for long-term care paid for with Medicaid.

Even though the current public-charge test discriminates against immigrants with disabilities, relatively few disabled immigrants with family support in the United States fail it. But President Donald Trump is preparing to drastically expand the public-charge test, including by explicitly targeting disabled immigrants. The proposed changes harken back to a period when the federal government used the test to deny permanent residency to individuals it deemed “degenerates,” such as LGBTQ immigrants, and other groups seen as “morally deficient,” including unmarried mothers. This judge is so anti-immigrant even the Trump administration wants him to chill

If Kris Kobach had a love child with ICE, that child would be Judge Andrew Hanen.

Judge Andrew Hanen may be the most anti-immigrant judge in the United States.

During the Obama administration, Hanen didn’t simply strike down several of President Obama’s signature immigration policies, he ordered a dox attack against tens of thousands of immigrants (though this order was later stayed).

After a dispute arose between Hanen and a handful of Justice Department attorneys defending Obama’s immigration policies — Hanen claims that the lawyers intentionally deceived him, the lawyers claim that they merely misunderstood a question — Hanen ordered hundreds of government lawyers, most of whom had never appeared in his courtroom, to attend a remedial ethics course.

Trump endorses GOP candidate who hired white supremacists

Trump endorsed Kris Kobach for governor of Kansas just days after Kobach was outed for hiring white supremacists.

Trump took time out of his vacation in New Jersey to endorse Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach for governor — just days after Republican consultants publicly outed Kobach for employing alleged white supremacists on his campaign.

Trump tweeted from his Bedminster, New Jersey golf resort Monday morning that Kobach “is a fantastic guy” who “will be a GREAT Governor and has my full & total Endorsement!”

A few days earlier on Friday, however, the Topeka Capitol Journal broke the news that Kobach’s campaign has been accused of employing three white supremacists, that we know of:
