THE LATEST: Hundreds of Children Separated from Families for Longer Than Court-Mandated Limit

More than 130 children remain separated from their families because of Trump’s cruel policy, which the DHS Inspector General says was flawed from the start due, in part, to the Trump administration’s indifference to family separations. Now, we’ve also learned that the Trump administration kept hundreds of children detained for longer than the court-mandated time limit of 72-hours, including for as long as 25 days in the case of one child. Here’s the latest:

The Trump administration left at least 860 immigrant children in holding cells longer than the court-mandated time limit.

Washington Post: “The DHS Office of Inspector General’s review found at least 860 migrant children were left in Border Patrol holding cells longer than the 72-hour limit mandated by U.S. courts, with one minor confined for 12 days and another for 25.”

More than 130 children remain separated from their families, and the majority of their parents have already been deported.

MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff: “BREAKING: New numbers just released by Trump administration on remaining separated migrant kids. ➡ 136 *still* in custody, not eligible for reunification or discharge. ➡ 3 of those kids are under 5 years old. ➡ Parents of 96 of those kids already deported.” Continue reading “THE LATEST: Hundreds of Children Separated from Families for Longer Than Court-Mandated Limit”

New Bill Would Hold HHS Feet to Fire for Unaccompanied Minors

Whereabouts of nearly 1,500 undocumented children are reportedly unknown

A bipartisan group of senators have introduced a bill designed to ensure that the Department of Health and Human Services takes full responsibility for, and keeps better track of, unaccompanied children who come to the border seeking entry to the United States and then are placed with U.S. sponsors.

The legislation follows a new report that revealed that the government could not determine the whereabouts of nearly 1,500 children that HHS had placed with sponsors this year.

The bill, introduced Tuesday by Republican Sens. James Lankford of Oklahoma and Rob Portman of Ohio and Democratic Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Thomas R. Carper of Delaware, would require HHS to notify state governments before placing a child in a state with a sponsor and would increase the number of immigration court judges to help the Justice Department reduce the immigration case backlog.

U.S. Loses Track of Another 1,500 Migrant Children, Investigators Find Image

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is unable to account for the whereabouts of nearly 1,500 migrant children who illegally entered the United States alone this year and were placed with sponsors after leaving federal shelters, according to congressional findings released on Tuesday.

The revelation echoes an admission in April by the Department of Health and Human Services that the government had similarly lost track of an additional 1,475 migrant children it had moved out of shelters last year.

In findings that lawmakers described as troubling, Senate investigators said the department could not determine with certainty the whereabouts of 1,488 out of 11,254 children the agency had placed with sponsors in 2018, based on follow-up calls from April 1 to June 30.

In 1 Week, the Trump Administration Restricts Green Card Holders, Fails to Reunite Families, & Treats Immigrants as Criminals

In one week, the Trump administration has failed to reunite families, treated immigrants as criminals, and most recently, announced new restrictions on green card holders for those on public aid. DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“From separating families at the border to ending protections for Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status recipients, Donald Trump has taken every opportunity to attack and tear apart immigrant families. Now he’s targeting lower-income residents by making it harder for them to care for their children and contribute to their communities. The cruelty of this administration knows no bounds. Democrats believe diversity is our nation’s greatest strength, and we will continue to fight for dignity and opportunity for immigrant families.”

Here’s more of the latest from Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda over the past week alone:

More than 180 children remain separated from their parents, many of whom have already been deported.

MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff: “BREAKING: New data from Trump administration on families it separated at border. ➡️ 182 kids *still* separated from parents. ➡️ 6 kids are under 5. ➡️ Parents of 141 already deported. ➡️ @ACLU says ‘communication breakdowns’ happening for some remaining reunifications.” Continue reading “In 1 Week, the Trump Administration Restricts Green Card Holders, Fails to Reunite Families, & Treats Immigrants as Criminals”

U.S. reduces refugee ceiling to 30,000 for 2019

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Monday that the U.S. will limit refugee admission to 30,000 in 2019, down from 45,000 in 2018. When Trump took office, the refugee cap stood at 110,000.

The big picture: It’s the smallest cap placed on the refugee program since it was created in 1980.

US Coast Guard employee removed for ‘white power sign’ on air

The US Coast Guard has removed a team member from duty after he was accused of making a “white power” sign on air.

The unidentified employee was seen glancing at the camera during an MSNBC interview on Friday night before briefly making the hand gesture.

He was at a desk in the background as the cable channel spoke to Coast Guard Commanding Officer Capt John Reed in Charleston, South Carolina.

The agency responded swiftly to the ensuing social media backlash.

Trump Ready To Help The White People Facing Hurricane Florence

Where Blacks, Latinos Outnumber Whites, Federal Disaster Aid Falls Short

After its disastrous response a year ago to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, the Trump administration is making sure everyone knows that this time emergency supplies are in place before Hurricane Florence washes into beach towns in the Carolinas starting this afternoon (Thursday, Sept. 13).

There is something significant going on here, though it is not the story Team Trump’s publicity machine is busily selling to journalists. It’s a story of racism, plain and simple, and new interactive maps establish the factual basis for that judgment.

Network television correspondents, especially, have been all over the story of the advance preparations with, obviously, full cooperation from the Trump administration. Video galore show rows of pre-positioned big rigs, their trailers filled with bottled water, diapers, food, emergency medical supplies and electric generators.

Past 48 Hours: Trump Pushes Anti-Immigrant Agenda, Lost Track of 1,500 Immigrant Children

The Trump administration continues to push its anti-immigrant agenda. Here’s some of the worst developments over just the past 48 hours alone:

The Trump administration lost track of 1,500 more immigrant children.

New York Times: “The Trump administration is unable to account for the whereabouts of nearly 1,500 migrant children who illegally entered the United States alone this year and were placed with sponsors after leaving federal shelters, according to congressional findings released on Tuesday.”

Trump suggested he would use unilateral executive powers to continue to push his anti-immigrant agenda before the midterms.

The Hill: “President Trump hinted in an interview with Hill.TV that he will use his executive powers to do more on immigration before the midterm elections. ‘I’ll be doing things over the next two weeks having to do with immigration, which I think you’ll be very impressed at,’ the president said during an exclusive 45-minute Oval Office interview on Tuesday with Hill.TV.”

Arrests of migrant families rose 38 percent in August in what Trump officials call a ‘crisis’ at the border

The number of migrant family members arrested for illegally entering the United States shot up 38 percent in August, according to statistics released Wednesday, a surge homeland security officials characterized as a “crisis.”

Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly 13,000 members of “family units” last month, the latest data shows, the highest August total ever recorded. The increase followed President Trump’s decision to back off the provision of his “zero tolerance” crackdown that separated children from parents in an attempt to deter illegal migration.

Migration numbers typically rebound in August after a summer lull. Overall, the number of foreigners apprehended or deemed “inadmissible” at border crossings rose to 46,560 in August, up from 40,011 in July.
