Provision in coronavirus stimulus bill would ban companies owned by Trump or his children from receiving bailout money

AlterNet logoA massive coronavirus stimulus plan that the Senate and White House agreed to in the early hours of Wednesday morning would bar any companies owned or controlled by President Donald Trump, the president’s children, Vice President Mike Pence, or members of Congress from receiving any taxpayer bailout money, according to a summary of the legislation circulated by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The sprawling $2 trillion bill, which has not yet been released in full, would “prohibit businesses controlled by the president, vice president, members of Congress, and heads of executive departments from receiving loans or investments from Treasury programs,” Schumer’s summary states.

“The children, spouses, and in-laws of the aforementioned principals are also included in this prohibition,” the document adds. Continue reading.

Republicans used to ignore Trump’s resorts. Now they’re spending millions.

After Trump launched his presidential campaign, GOP spending at his businesses has soared.

In 2017, Sen. Steve Daines’ campaign dropped $281 at Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas. The following year, the Iowa Republican Party paid $945 for rooms at a Trump resort in Miami. And four months later, Protect the House, which funnels money to House Republicans, spent $154,500 to rent out part of the Trump hotel in Washington.

In total, nearly 200 campaigns and political groups — virtually all conservative — have spent more than $8 million at President Donald Trump’s resorts and other businesses since his election in 2016, according to a yet-to-be-released report from the liberal-leaning consumer rights group Public Citizen obtained by POLITICO.

That wasn’t the case before the real estate mogul and reality TV star got into politics.

When Trump visits his clubs, government agencies and Republicans pay to be where he is

Washington Post logoWhen President Trump finished the first official rally of his reelection campaign this week, he got on Air Force One. But he didn’t go home to Washington. Instead, he flew 190 miles in the opposite direction — to visit his own Doral golf resort, outside Miami.

The resort’s profits have fallen since Trump took office. But it had a major event planned for the next day, a fundraiser for Trump’s reelection campaign.

It would be his 126th visit to one of his properties since taking office. And this visit — like more than a dozen before it — would bring paying customers, allowing Trump to play a double role.

Republicans spend more than $4 million at Trump properties

Republican candidates and campaign committees have spent more than $4 million at hotel, golf and vineyard properties that bear President Trump’s name since he was inaugurated in 2017.

More than three dozen members of Congress have held fundraisers or spent the night at Trump properties, according to a review of filings made with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) over the last two years.

More than a quarter of the money spent has come from Trump’s own campaign, which has paid his businesses nearly $1.5 million over that span, both for rent and for fundraisers.

President Trump, at his luxury seaside golf course here, turned his eye to domestic politics Saturday morning — attacking former president Barack Obama, questioning the FBI, torching CNN and bragging about his 2016 win.

With country roads to the golf course cordoned off and aides mum about the president’s activities on a sunny Saturday morning, he gave a glimpse into his mind around 11 a.m. local time. He also said on Twitter that he planned to golf.

“The stories you heard about the 12 Russians yesterday took place during the Obama Administration, not the Trump Administration,” the president tweeted, about Friday’s federal indictments against 12 Russian intelligence agents charged with hacking into the Democratic National Committee servers and stealing emails.

West Palm Beach, Florida (CNN) — President Donald Trump has spent nearly one-third of his time in office this year at one of the properties that either bear his name or that his family company owns, according to CNN’s count.

Tracking the President’s Visits to Trump Properties

Karen Yourish and Troy Griggs with the New York Times are tracking the presidents visits to properties owned, managed or branded by the Trump Organization (An ethics concern for many, and as taxpayers, we wonder who’s paying for these visits there for the president, his family and guests. We can only guess it’s taxpayers like you and us, as we know the president is proud of not paying his.)
