FACT CHECK: Trump Lies To Justify His Ineffective Border Wall

As predicted, Trump lied repeatedly at his El Paso, Texas rally tonight to justify his ineffective, unnecessary and unwanted border wall. Here’s the truth:

TRUMP’S LIE: “I spoke to people that have been here a long time. They said when that wall went up, it’s a whole different ballgame. Is that a correct statement? Whole different ballgame…and I don’t care whether the mayor is a Republican or a Democrat, they’re full of crap when they say it hasn’t made a big difference.”

FACT: Numerous metrics rated El Paso as one of the country’s safest cities for the past 20 years.

Washington Post: “For the past 20 years, a number of published ratings have listed El Paso as one of the nation’s safest cities, and FBI statistics show that, like most major U.S. cities, El Paso’s crime rate has been dropping since the mid-1990s.”

NBC News: “El Paso does currently enjoy a relatively low rate of crime: There were 19 murders and 1,819 aggravated assaults in the city in 2017, according to FBI crime data. The city’s murder rate is about half that of the national average, and a fraction of more dangerous cities. In the similarly sized city of Detroit, there were 267 murders and 10,193 aggravated assaults, for instance.” Continue reading “FACT CHECK: Trump Lies To Justify His Ineffective Border Wall”

President Trump’s fantastical human-trafficking claims

“Human trafficking by airplane is almost impossible. Human trafficking by van and truck, in the back seat of a car, and going through a border where there’s nobody for miles and miles, and there’s no wall to protect — it’s very easy. They make a right, then they make a left. They come into our country. And they sell people.”

— President Trump, remarks at an event on human trafficking, Feb. 1

“This really is an invasion of our country by human traffickers. These are people that are horrible people bringing in women mostly, but bringing in women and children into our country.”

— Trump, interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Feb. 3

“Human traffickers and sex traffickers take advantage of the wide-open areas between our ports of entry to smuggle thousands of young girls and women into the United States and to sell them into prostitution and modern-day slavery.”

Trump Built His Presidency On Lies, His State of the Union Is No Different

Trump has repeatedly and blatantly lied to the American people over and over again, tonight, his State of the Union address is no different.

While Trump has failed to deliver on his promises or meaningfully improve the well-being of middle-class families, Trump has attempted to mislead Americans about basic facts and has tried to invent false statistics to push his unpopular policies.

The longest partial federal government shutdown in American history may be over, but the economic consequences for people across the country endure. Decades of conservative rhetoric about smaller government were tested in real time, with disastrous costs for individuals, families, and businesses. On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump will deliver a State of the Union address that is sure to pass the blame for his shutdown onto others while he takes credit for an economy that has been growing for nine years. In his two years in office, President Trump has done everything in his power to set American workers and families back and place the country on the road to a low-wage, high-cost economy in which a few hands hold all the economic power. The 35-day shutdown is just the latest in a series of actions that hurt everyone except the wealthy and those with political connections.

Trump’s shutdown cost American families

The shutdown is the latest example of the Trump administration’s disregard for American workers and families. The Congressional Budget Office calculated that the five-week shutdown cost the U.S. economy $11 billion$3 billion of which will never be recouped. But for millions of Americans, the shutdown’s effect on their paychecks was more apparent. About 800,000 federal workers were furloughed or worked without pay, and as many as 1.2 million contractors felt the impact—and may not receive back pay. In addition, shutdowns have a disproportionate effect on black workers and families. In fact, the proportion of federal workers who are black women is twice as high in the federal government as it is in the greater civilian workforce. At the beginning of the shutdown, about half of all federal workers were still required to show up to work without pay; yet that number grew as the Trump administration played favorites with agencies in response to lobbying from some industries. Trump doesn’t believe his own damaging rants about ‘fake news’

President Trump claims — falsely — that he invented the term “fake news.”

He didn’t, of course, but he sure has popularized it. By one count, he has uttered the word “fake” more than 400 times since he was elected, usually applied to stories, journalists or news organizations.

“I’m so proud I’ve been able to convince people how fake it is,” he bragged to Lou Dobbs, one of his favorite media toadies, on Fox Business Network last fall, talking about mainstream media reporting. He specifically called out CBS and NBC, and, of course, he has consistently trashed the New York Times.

President Trump’s Texas-size whoppers

“58,000 non-citizens voted in Texas, with 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote. These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. All over the country, especially in California, voter fraud is rampant. Must be stopped. Strong voter ID! @foxandfriends”

— President Trump, in a tweet, Jan. 27, 2019

“Thousands of illegal aliens who have committed sexual crimes against children are right now in Texas prisons. Most came through our Southern Border. We can end this easily – We need a Steel Barrier or Wall. Walls Work! John Jones, Texas Department of Public Safety. @FoxNews”

— Trump, in a tweet, Jan. 13, 2019

“23% of Federal inmates are illegal immigrants. Border arrests are up 240%. In the Great State of Texas, between 2011 & 2018, there were a total of 292,000 crimes by illegal aliens, 539 murders, 32,000 assaults, 3,426 sexual assaults and 3000 weapons charges. Democrats come back!” Continue reading “President Trump’s Texas-size whoppers”

Trump will call for ‘unity’ tonight. It’s a scam, and here’s the proof.

It’s one of the most dispiriting rituals that attend State of the Union addresses in the Trump era: White House advisers piously promise us that President Trump will issue new calls for unity and bipartisan comity, and for reasons that remain baffling, far too many observers then feel obliged to pretend that these soothing exhortations are real.

But this time around, there’s just no excuse for playing along. That’s because we’ve already seen what happens in the real world after Trump stands before Congress and carries out his unity routine — not once, but twice.

The New York Times reports that White House officials are previewing a speech that will supposedly “lean into a bipartisan and optimistic vision for the country.” White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway vows that it will call for “comity” and “compromise.” Former White House spokesman Raj Shah gushes that Trump can “turn the page” with “unifying, patriotic, and optimistic themes that have worked well for him in previous addresses.”

Donald J. Trump was burning through cash.

It was early 2016, and he was lending tens of millions of dollars to his presidential campaign and had been spending large sums to expand the Trump Organization’s roster of high-end properties.

To finance his business’s growth, Mr. Trump turned to a longtime ally, Deutsche Bank, one of the few banks still willing to lend money to the man who has called himself “The King of Debt.”

The president’s cover story about Trump Tower Moscow keeps falling apart

When President Donald Trump was interviewed by the New York Times this week, he reiterated his claim that the Trump Organization’s abandoned Trump Tower Moscow project was not a high priority for him in 2016. Trump told the Times that he wasn’t even sure his company found a location in Moscow for the project.

But BuzzFeed News’ Emma Loop reported that according to “hundreds of pages of business documents, e-mails, text messages” that BuzzFeed has obtained, the Trump Organization was looking into at least one prime location for the skyscraper.

For the Jan. 31 New York Times interview, Trump spoke to reporters Maggie Haberman and Peter Baker as well as Publisher A. G. Sulzberger. And he said of Trump Tower Moscow, “That deal was not important. It was essentially a letter of intent or an option. I’m not even sure that they had a site.”

Intelligence officials were ‘misquoted’ after public hearing, Trump claims

Credit: Evan Vucci, AP

A day after ridiculing his top intelligence officials as “passive and naive” and claiming they were ignorant about world affairs, President Trump on Thursday said the media had fabricated a conflict and that the officials were “misquoted” by the press after a public congressional hearing that was carried live on television.

The directors of the FBI and the CIA, the director of national intelligence and other officials testified Tuesday about worldwide threats to U.S. national security, revealing significant differences between what the intelligence community has concluded and what the president claims about Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, the prospect for nuclear talks with North Korea, the strength of the Islamic State and other security issues.

Trump lashed out at the intelligence chiefs on Twitter, calling their assessments “wrong” and suggesting that “Intelligence should go back to school!”
