CNN fact checker reveals the truth behind Trump’s bizarre claim about a fake award

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump lies all the time. But some of those lies are stranger than others.

One falsehood that has been haunting CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale is Trump’s repeated claim, first made right before the 2016 election, that he won Michigan’s “Man of the Year” award five years go. The problem is that there’s no record of such an award or of him winning it.

Trump made the claim again Thursday night, reigniting the search for the truth. Neither Trump’s campaign nor White House has ever offered an explanation for his baseless assertion.

Brutal CNN fact check busts Trump for constantly stealing credit for Obama’s achievements

AlterNet logoCNN’s John Avlon on Thursday exposed President Donald Trump’s habit of taking credit for agreements that were actually made by his predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

In a “Reality Check” segment, Avlon played several video clips of Trump boasting about things he’d supposedly done, although in reality they were done before he even became president.

He starts out by pointing to Trump claiming credit for the opening of a Shell plant in Pennsylvania this week, despite the fact that construction for the plant was first announced by the Obama administration in 2012.

President Trump Claims Credit for Shell Plant Announced in 2012 Under President Obama

MONACA, PENNSYLVANIA — President Donald Trump sought to take credit Tuesday for the construction of a major manufacturing facility in western Pennsylvania as he tries to reinvigorate supporters in the Rust Belt towns that sent him to the White House in 2016.

Trump visited Shell’s soon-to-be completed Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex, which will turn the area’s vast natural gas deposits into plastics. The facility, which critics claim will become the largest air polluter in western Pennsylvania, is being built in an area hungry for investment.

Speaking to a crowd of thousands of workers dressed in fluorescent orange and yellow vests, Trump said “This would have never happened without me and us.” In fact, Shell announced its plans to build the complex in 2012, when President Barack Obama was in office. A Shell spokesman said employees were paid for their time attending Trump’s remarks.

Trump accuses Google of anti-conservative bias without providing evidence

Washington Post logoThe president’s tweets on Tuesday morning came after a Fox News interview with an ex-Google engineer that aired on Monday.

President Trump accused Google on Tuesday of favoring negative news stories about him in the 2016 presidential election, apparently in response to a report on Fox News.

In a series of three tweets Tuesday morning, Trump said he had met in the Oval Office with Google chief executive Sundar Pichai, who told him the company didn’t boost Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election, wouldn’t interfere with the 2020 election and wasn’t involved with the Chinese military.

“We are watching Google very closely!” Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Pretending To Care About Union Members, Trump Feeds Fatcats

Donald Trump: billionaire of the people. When he ran for office, he said, “The American worker will finally have a president who will protect them and fight for them.”

And how’s that working out for the American worker? Not very well, actually, not very well. When it comes down to picking sides—standing up for workers’ rights or lining the pockets of CEOs and shareholders—Trump aligned himself and his policies with the fat cats. This cost workers money and safety. The truth is that American corporations got a president who protected them and fought for them.

The proof is in Trump’s legislation, regulation and secretary selections. The most recent example is Trump’s Twitter appointment of Eugene Scalia as Secretary of Labor. This is the department specifically designated to “foster, promote, and develop the welfare of wage earners, job seekers, and retirees.” Scalia, though, has made his fortune over decades by fighting to ensure that the big guys—corporations—don’t, in fact, have to abide by regulations intended to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the little guys—wage earners, job seekers, and retirees.

CNN Anchors Correct Trump Misstatements at Press Conference

During a Tuesday morning press conference, President Donald Trump not only defended his attack on Maryland Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (who chairs the House Oversight Committee) and the city of Baltimore — he also made some misleading statements on tariffs and the Washington Post. And it didn’t take CNN reporters Jim Sciutto and Poppy Harlow long to fact-check Trump’s bizarre claims.

Sciutto explained why Trump’s statements about U.S. tariffs on China are misleading, telling Harlow, “He said that China is paying, that the U.S. is getting billions and billions of dollars in tariffs from China. Of course, the fact is that U.S. importers and consumers pay for tariffs.”

Sciutto went on to say Trump’s claim that Baltimore’s city government, with Cummings’ help, has “wasted billions of dollars” has no basis in fact. Trump, Sciutto noted, made “quite a charge against Rep. Elijah Cummings, saying that Baltimore has taken — stolen, he seems to be saying, or wasted billions of dollar.”

Trump says Washington Post should apologize to McConnell over ‘Russian asset’ column

The Hill logoPresident Trump on Tuesday said The Washington Post should apologize to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after it published an opinion piece titled “Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset” that criticized the senator’s opposition to election security legislation.

“I think The Washington Post is a Russian asset by comparison,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a trip to Virginia.

“Mitch McConnell loves our country. He’s done a great job,” Trump added, noting that he did not read the piece. “If they actually said that, that Mitch McConnell is an asset of Russia, they ought to be ashamed of themselves, and they ought to apologize.”
