Most Republicans Say They Doubt the Election. How Many Really Mean It?

New York Times logo

Survey research tries to sort out the typical partisan reactions to a loss from an erosion of trust that may be more lasting.

Since the election, surveys have consistently found that about 70 percent to 80 percent of Republicans don’t buy the results. They don’t agree that Joe Biden won fair and square. They say the election was rigged. And they say enough fraud occurred to tip the outcome.

Those numbers sound alarmingly high, and they imply that the overwhelming majority of people in one political party in America doubt the legitimacy of a presidential election. But the reality is more complicated, political scientists say. Research has shown that the answers that partisans (on the left as well as on the right) give to political questions often reflect not what they know as fact, but what they wish were true. Or what they think they should say.

It’s incredibly hard to separate sincere belief from wishful thinking from what political scientists call partisan cheerleading. But on this topic especially, the distinctions matter a lot. Are Republican voters merely expressing support for the president by standing by his claims of fraud — in effectively the same way Republicans in Congress have — or have they accepted widespread fraud as true? Do these surveys suggest a real erosion in faith in American elections, or something more familiar, and temporary? Continue reading.

Fox News Host Pulls Apart Election Lies Trump Spouted On Network Hours Earlier

Eric Shawn debunked claims that his colleague Maria Bartiromo allowed the president to amplify on her show.

Fox News host Eric Shawn on Sunday debunked election disinformation that President Donald Trump shared on the same network only hours earlier.

Trump unloaded a stream of baseless claims about a rigged election in his first televised interview since the election to his devout Fox News ally Maria Bartiromo, who encouraged the allegations and allowed them to go largely unchallenged.

But Fox weekend anchor Shawn pointed out on “America’s News Headquarters” that Trump’s campaign has failed to prove any of his accusations in court.  Continue reading.

Trump Schemes To Launch 2024 Campaign At Biden’s Inauguration

President Donald Trump may be leaving the White House in the very near future, but it does not look like he will be going away, as promised, anytime soon.

The lame duck president is already strategizing for a 2024 presidential run to regain control of the White House, according to The Daily Beast. The publication reports that insiders close to the situation have revealed details about the president’s latest plot.

It appears Trump has no intention of moving on from the presidential election defeat. While most former presidents move on with their lives after leaving the White House, insiders suggest Trump is ultimately trying to stay in the spotlight. The president’s assessment is reportedly based on television ratings as opposed to actual professional experience and the ability to effectively govern the country. Continue reading.

‘I’m Sick Of It’: GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman Unloads On Republican Colleagues, Trump

TOPLINE — Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-Va.) pulled no punches against President Trump and his fellow Republicans in Congress in an interview with Forbes, accusing them of a “massive grift” in refusing to acknowledge the results of the election and claiming Trump appeals to groups that are “anti-Semitic” and “anti-American.”

KEY FACTS

  • Riggleman, one of just 10 GOP House members acknowledging Joe Biden’s victory, said the Republican refusal to acknowledge the result is “just money-making for the 2024 election” and “completely unethical,” saying he’s spoken to 30 or 40 GOP members of Congress who privately acknowledge the result despite public silence.
  • “They’re worried about committee assignments, they’re worried about the team,” Riggleman said of Republicans who have stayed loyal to Trump, noting that breaking with Trump can “cost them their careers,” and that “the career is more important than the facts, it’s that simple.” Continue reading.

Georgia Secretary of State’s Message to Trump After State’s Election Recount: ‘You Should Leave Quietly’

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said that President Donald Trump should “leave quietly,” after Georgia certified its election results for Joe Biden last week.

In an interview published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Saturday, Raffensperger, a Republican, said he’s received threats and angry messages from the president and fellow GOP politicians who disagree with his decision to certify the election.

“My job as secretary of state is to make sure we have fair and honest elections, follow the law, follow the process,” Raffensperger said in the interview. “When you lose an election, you should leave quietly. It’s the will of the people that has been expressed,” he added. Continue reading.

Federal appeals court panel rejects Trump request to block certification of Pennsylvania’s election results

A federal appeals court on Friday rejected President Trump’s request for an emergency injunction to overturn the certification of Pennsylvania’s election results, delivering another defeat to the president’s attempts to reverse the outcome in a state that has already formalized President-elect Joe Biden’s victory there.

Trump’s campaign had filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit after a U.S. district court last weekend dismissed its federal lawsuit against Pennsylvania election authorities and rejected the campaign’s request to be allowed to revise the suit to include more allegations.

The lawsuit sought to halt certification of Pennsylvania’s results on the grounds that Republicans were illegally disadvantaged because some Democratic-leaning areas allowed voters to correct administrative errors on their mail ballots. Continue reading.

MAGA Lawyer Insults Trump Judge Who Tossed Their ‘Fraud’ Case

Jenna Ellis, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney and the Senior Legal Adviser to the Trump campaign is once again being mocked, this time for her near-immediate response to a unanimous 3-0 ruling against the campaign in a Pennsylvania election case.

Ellis says she and Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, have decided that the three judges, who were all appointed by Republican presidents – including the one who wrote the opinion who was appointed by Trump himself – are all part of the “activist judicial machinery” in Pennsylvania.

She is also vowing to take the case – which the judges say has “no merit,” to the Supreme Court. Continue reading.

Trump campaign loses appeal over Pennsylvania race

President Trump’s campaign on Friday lost its appeal in the legal battle to contest Pennsylvania’s already-certified election results.

A federal appeals court in Philadelphia upheld a previous ruling that dismissed the campaign’s case to prevent Pennsylvania from certifying its election results showing former Vice President Joe Biden winning the state.

The three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals determined that “the Campaign’s claims [of widespread voter fraud in the state] have no merit,” according to the court’s opinion. Continue reading.

Trump rails against Twitter in late night tweets

The Hill logo

President Trump railed against Twitter in late night tweets on Thanksgiving, criticizing its trends algorithm and “big Conservative discrimination.”

The president slammed the social media platform for “sending out totally false ‘Trends’ that have absolutely nothing to do with what is really trending in the world.”

“They make it up, and only negative ‘stuff,’” he wrote. “Same thing will happen to Twitter as is happening to @FoxNews daytime. Also, big Conservative discrimination!” Continue reading.

Trump Flips Out At Reporter: ‘Don’t Ever Talk To The President That Way’

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason pushed back on Trump’s election fraud claims, prompting an outburst.

Donald Trump lashed out during a Thanksgiving press conference at a reporter who pushed back against his false claims of election fraud, calling the journalist a “lightweight” and telling him, “I’m the president of the United States.”

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason asked Trump if he will concede when the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden

“Well if they do, they made a mistake, because this election was a fraud,” Trump replied, before launching into a tirade about the number of votes Biden got compared to former President Barack Obama. Continue reading.
