Dow plunges nearly 3,000 points as Fed intervention does little to subdue Wall Street’s distress

Washington Post logoU.S. markets went deep red on coronavirus fears, shredding roughly 12 percent from the S&P 500 and Nasdaq

Fears that policymakers have not done enough to avert a protracted economic downturn deepened a sense of national crisis on Monday and sent stocks to their worst single-day losses since the Black Monday crash of 1987.

The selloff accelerated, with the Dow Jones industrial average plunging nearly 3,000 points, after President Trump warned that disruption from the coronavirus pandemic could last through August and issued new public health guidance, saying Americans should limit gatherings to no more than 10 people. He also defended his handling of the crisis, which has been marred by a slow rollout of testing, saying his administration has done “a fantastic job.”

From Washington to Wall Street, the coronavirus is reshaping American life. The Supreme Court said it would postpone scheduled oral arguments through April, citing its stance during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic and outbreaks of yellow fever in 1973 and 1798.

Trump’s rage at the media takes a dangerous new turn

Washington Post logoIt’s bad enough that President Trump has relentlessly minimized the coronavirus threat for nakedly political reasons, disastrously hampering the federal government response to the crisis, with untold consequences to come.

Determined not to be outdone by his own malice and depravity, Trump is taking new steps that threaten to make all of it worse. He’s telling millions of Americans to entirely shut out any and all correctives to his falsehoods. He’s insisting they must plug their ears to any criticism designed to hold his government accountable for the failures we’re seeing, even though such criticism could nudge the response in a more constructive direction.

Trump is now raging at the media for reporting on his botched claims about Google’s plans for a new website to steer people to testing options. Trump dramatically overpromised in this regard, forcing Google to scale down the expectations he had created. Continue reading.

Why Trump’s Top Three Coronavirus Strategies Will Fail

Even as President Donald Trump continues to insist that he’s done a superb job handling the coronavirus crisis, the evidence of his extreme failures abound. In a hearing before Congress on Thursday, a top official in the administration’s response contradicted Trump about the government’s testing capabilities and acknowledged the shortfall as an important “failing.”

And the same official, Dr. Anthony Fauci, warned the previous day about the outbreak: “It’s going to get worse.”

While Fauci was speaking as an expert in infectious disease, economists — and anyone glancing at the stock market — fear that the risk of financial fallout from the pandemic is equally dim. Continue reading.

Scientist details how Trump ‘obliterated’ Obama’s pandemic response infrastructure out of spite

AlterNet logoThe coronavirus disease that was first diagnosed in China’s Hubei province has now spread to at least 47 countries and every continent except Antarctica. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak an international health emergency. President Trump sought to play down the threat from coronavirus and announced Vice President Mike Pence would be his point person to coordinate government efforts to prevent a widespread outbreak. As Trump spoke, a new milestone in the novel coronavirus outbreak was reported, in a possible example of community spread: A person was diagnosed with the virus in Northern California who had not traveled to any of the affected regions of the world, nor had known contact with anyone else who did. We speak with Laurie Garrett, former senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations and a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer. She is the author of several books, including “Ebola: Story of an Outbreak,” “The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance” and “Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health.”

Trump and Pence Won’t Be Tested After Meeting With Infected Brazilian Official

New York Times logo“Both the president and vice president had almost no interactions with the individual who tested positive,” the White House press secretary said.

WASHINGTON — President Trump will not be tested for the coronavirus after coming into contact with a Brazilian official who tested positive for the virus just days after participating in meetings with him in Florida, the White House said on Thursday.

Fabio Wajngarten, a top communications aide to President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, tested positive days after accompanying him to Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and posing for a photo with the president and Vice President Mike Pence. In the photo, which he posted on social media, Mr. Wajngarten is standing shoulder to shoulder with Mr. Trump, who is clutching a brown “Make Brazil Great Again” baseball cap.

A video from the event also showed Mr. Wajngarten standing directly behind Mr. Trump and Mr. Bolsonaro as they spoke to a crowd. Continue reading.

Graham to self-quarantine after Mar-a-Lago trip

The Hill logoSen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is self-quarantining after a trip to Mar-a-Lago where Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was also present.

Graham, according to a statement from his office, “has no recollection of direct contact” with Bolsonaro, who is being monitored for the coronavirus, or his spokesman, who has tested positive.

“However, in an abundance of caution and upon the advice of his doctor, Senator Graham has decided to self-quarantine awaiting the results of a coronavirus test,” the statement from Graham’s office said.   Continue reading.

Second guest who was with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last weekend has tested positive

Washington Post logoA second person who visited President Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate last weekend has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to emails from Republican Party officials to other guests who were present.

The case means the president has been near two people who have since been diagnosed as infected. On Saturday, Trump dined and was photographed with a senior Brazilian official who later tested positive.

The latest diagnosis involves an individual who attended a Sunday luncheon hosted by Trump Victory, a committee that raises money for the Trump campaign and the Republican Party, according to an email from party officials. Trump delivered remarks at the event, which was attended by about 1,000 people. Continue reading.

Bolsonaro aide tests positive for coronavirus days after Trump meeting

Axios logoBrazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s press secretary tested positive for coronavirus days after taking part in meetings with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo reports and multiple American outlets have confirmed.

The latest: Bolsonaro is currently being monitored, according to Brazilian media. Fabio Wajngarten, the aide, was photographed with Trump on Saturday.

  • Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that he’s “not concerned” about Wajngarten’s diagnosis.
  • Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) both said they will enter self-quarantine after being at Mar-a-Lago with the Brazilian delegation last weekend.

A far-right populist, Bolsonaro had dismissed the alarm around the virus as a “fantasy” spread by the media as recently as Wednesday. Continue reading.

From tweet eruptions to economic steps, Trump struggles for calm amid market meltdown and coronavirus crisis

Washington Post logoPresident Trump confronted one of the most perilous days of his presidency Monday by first erupting in a barrage of commentary that failed to calm the cratering financial markets, struggling to inspire confidence that his administration could stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

But by the time the sun set in Washington, Trump sounded momentarily chastened by the turbulence and previewed a raft of emergency measures to shore up the economy.

“We have a very strong economy,” the president told reporters, “but this blindsided the world.” Continue reading.

Germaphobe Trump is ‘definitely melting down’ over coronavirus crisis. But he still isn’t ready to cancel MAGA rallies: report

AlterNet logoOne the great ironies of the coronavirus threat is that although President Donald Trump has downplayed its severity, he has a reputation for being a major germaphobe. Journalist Gabriel Sherman, this week in Vanity Fair, reports that Trump is still as much of a “germaphobe” as ever — while treating coronavirus like a battle with his political enemies and insisting that the situation is under control in the United States.

“As Trump pushes a nothing-to-see-here message in public, sources said he’s privately terrified about getting the virus,” Sherman reports. One of Vanity Fair’s sources, according to Sherman, said that Trump is so paranoid that he believes journalists will try to contract coronavirus on purpose in order to give it to him on Air Force One.

That source told Vanity Fair that Trump is “definitely melting down over this.” Continue reading.
