House Majority Leader threatening to hold all Trump allies who defy subpoenas in contempt of Congress: ‘This is a huge cover-up’

Although House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to voice her opposition to impeaching President Donald Trump — much to the chagrin of pro-impeachment House Democrats — she is very much in favor of aggressive House investigations of the president. And House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is threatening to hold all Trump officials who have defied House subpoenas in contempt of Congress next week.

One of the people in danger of being held in contempt of Congress is former White House Communications Hope Hicks, who the Trump White House has ordered to defy a House Judiciary Committee subpoena. Hicks, however, has expressed some willingness to cooperate with the Committee and has already provided some of the documents that Rep. Jerry Nadler (chairman of the Committee) has requested. Nadler has described Hicks’ actions as an act of “good faith” and indicated that he will continue to negotiate with her as well as with Annie Donaldson, a top aide to former White House Counsel Don McGahn and another recipient of a House subpoena.

Hoyer, speaking to reporters this week, said of Hicks and other Trump allies who might defy subpoenas, “This is the way to enforce the subpoena and to compel witnesses to testify that we have a constitutional responsibility — not just authority, but a constitutional responsibility — to get information on the operations of the people’s government that the American people should have. And if the administration and the president take the position, ‘We’re not going to cooperate,’ that’s untenable and unacceptable. And we’re going to move forward to try to enforce that, and this is the first but important step.”

Pelosi: Trump ‘is engaged in a cover-up’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday accused President Trump of being “engaged in a cover-up” following a special meeting of House Democrats focused on ongoing congressional investigations into the Trump administration.

“We do believe that it is important to follow the facts, we believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States, and we believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up, in a cover-up,” Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Her broadside came just moments before she, Senate Minority Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and other Democrats headed to the White House to meet with Trump on a possible $2 trillion infrastructure package. But the meeting quickly went off the rails after Trump learned of Pelosi’s “cover-up” remarks; the president told the Democrats he couldn’t work with them until they halted all of their “phony investigations.”

Carl Bernstein Details Trump’s ‘Demonstrable’ Russia Cover-Up: ‘He Wants Our Credibility Destroyed Because We’re Reporting the Truth’

The following article by Elizabeth Preza was posted on the AlterNet website July 29, 2018:

“[Keeping the base] energized against the press is absolutely essential to Donald Trump fighting and furthering the cover-up.”

Carl Bernstein

Legendary Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein on Sunday laid out Donald Trump’s “demonstrable” cover-up, telling CNN’s Brian Stelter that the president wants the media’s “credibility destroyed because we are reporting the truth.”

Bernstein on Friday reported Cohen’s claim that Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and Russian nationals offering dirt on Hillary Clinton. Per the CNN report, Cohen is willing to “make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller.”

Speaking with Stelter on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Bernstein compared the Russia investigation to Watergate, explaining that he and his reporters are “making judgements about what is news” while those in power attempt to discredit the sources.
