Supreme Court allows transgender military ban to be enforced

The Supreme Court handed President Trump a partial win on Tuesday, allowing the administration to temporarily enforce its restrictions on transgender people serving in the military.

The court ruled 5-4 to stay two district court orders that blocked the new policy, with the court’s liberal wing dissenting. The justices said they are waiting for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to weigh in.

“The department is pleased with the orders issued by the Supreme Court today,” Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Carla Gleason said in a statement. “We will continue to work with the Department of Justice regarding next steps in the pending lawsuits. As always, we treat all transgender persons with respect and dignity.”

Statement from Chairman Ken Martin on Trump Banning Transgender People from Serving in the Military

DFL Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s twitter announcement that he will ban transgender people from the military:

“In the middle of Trump’s ‘American Heroes Week’, the president took to twitter to announce his plan to ban transgender Americans from serving in the military. Trump’s decision not only puts our country at risk but also humiliates real American patriots protecting American people around the globe.

“The DFL is proud to stand with the brave transgender service members and we will continue to stand with the transgender community against this administration’s bigotry.”

Another added that it would “be fun to watch some of them have to defend” having transgender soldiers.

It turns out they didn’t even need Democrats to do it; some high-profile Republicans were happy to. And while they and other senators were seeking answers Wednesday, the White House was providing basically none. The Pentagon was also reportedly in the dark when the announcement was made Wednesday morning. Continue reading “Trump’s transgender military ban is another case of political malpractice”
