Trump’s Fed feud roils markets, alarms Republicans

President Trump’s intensifying attacks on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell are having a destabilizing effect on financial markets and rattling Republican lawmakers.

Trump’s criticisms of the central bank’s chief policymaker kicked into high gear Monday, not long after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin tried to reassure markets by insisting Trump has no intention of firing Powell.

Trump has undercut that claim by blaming the Fed for market volatility and recent economic woes.

Dow plunges more than 600 points in another day of losses, officially wiping out its 2018 gains

The Dow Jones industrial average dove more than 600 points Wednesday as another wave of volatility swept through U.S. financial markets.

The blue-chip barometer bobbed in the red most of the session, dragged down by a weak housing report and a beleaguered technology sector.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq took the steepest losses of the day, down 4.4 percent. It’s now in correction territory, down 11.4 percent from its September 2018 high, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

Trump is proud of the booming stock market. He may not realize how few Americans that really helps.

President Trump took the microphone at an awards ceremony for Minority Enterprise Development Week to highlight his commitment to helping minorities and urban residents enjoy the economic prosperity he promised on the campaign trail.

“Minority businesses employ 8 million people and generate more than $1 trillion in annual economic output,” he said Tuesday.

“My administration is deeply committed to empowering minority business owners. We’re working to lift government barriers so that you can thrive, prosper and grow,” Trump added. “And speaking of growing, our stock market just hit another record high.
