Repealing the ACA without a Replacement — The Risks to American Health Care

The following commentary by former President Barack Obama was posted on the New England Journal of Medicine website January 26, 2017:

Health care policy often shifts when the country’s leadership changes. That was true when I took office, and it will likely be true with President-elect Donald Trump. I am proud that my administration’s work, through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and other policies, helped millions more Americans know the security of health care in a system that is more effective and efficient. At the same time, there is more work to do to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality, affordable health care. What the past 8 years have taught us is that health care reform requires an evidence-based, careful approach, driven by what is best for the American people. That is why Republicans’ plan to repeal the ACA with no plan to replace and improve it is so reckless. Rather than jeopardize financial security and access to care for tens of millions of Americans, policymakers should develop a plan to build on what works before they unravel what is in place. Republicans Move Forward with Efforts to Repeal the Affordable Care Act – Without a Replacement 


MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP 

Following his inauguration, President Trump signed a vague, yet potentially broad, executive order attacking the Affordable Care Act. As President Trump and Congressional Republicans continue to move forward with their plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, they still don’t have a real plan for replacing the law and ensuring millions of Americans aren’t kicked off of their health coverage. Republicans are now in charge of our health care system, and they are responsible for the chaos, loss of coverage, and premium increases that the American people will see as a result of their actions. Democrats will continue to fight against Republican attacks on our health care system and their efforts to Make America Sick Again.
