GOP teeing up critical race theory for midterms in Minnesota, across the nation

Star Tribune Banner

GOP seizes on critical race theory as partisan divider.

ASHBY, MINN. – Jason Kirchenwitz wanted to know more about an issue arising often now in his conversations, and he suspected others did too, especially Republican activists he helps organize in rural Grant County.

He was right. Nearly 100 people filed into a gymnasium in this town of fewer than 500 people last week for a meeting he called. They all came to hear about critical race theory.

“I have kids in school,” said Kirchenwitz. “I don’t want them pressured or pushed into other views.” Continue reading.

DFL Party Statement on the Ousting of Representative Cheney

DFL Logo

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA — Today, DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement following Representative Liz Cheney’s ousting from Republican Party leadership:

“Donald Trump’s lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 elections led to the storming of the United States Capitol in a violent attempt to overthrow American democracy. Congressional Republicans just removed Representative Liz Cheney from party leadership for acknowledging that basic fact, fighting back against those lies, and voting to hold the perpetrator accountable.

“Representatives Hagedorn, Emmer, Fischbach, and Stauber should have joined Cheney in working to stop the Big Lie from becoming part of Republican dogma. Instead, they meekly sat back and allowed Cheney to take the fall for standing up for truth, for the rule of law, and for our democracy. This act of political cowardice on the part of Minnesota’s Republican Congressional delegation should not be forgiven and it must not be forgotten.

“It is abundantly clear that the Republican Party is now the party of Donald Trump, the Big Lie, and the January insurrection, and every single Republican who allowed that to happen should be deeply ashamed of the miserable and morally bankrupt state of their party.”

NRCC warns donors Trump will find out if they opt out of monthly donations

Washington Post logo

The National Republican Congressional Committee threatened donors that it will tell former president Donald Trump that they are defectors if they opt out of giving recurring monthly funds to the campaign arm for the House GOP.

After donating to the NRCC, donors are shown a yellow box with a small pre-checked box that warns: “If you UNCHECK this box, we will have to tell Trump you’re a DEFECTOR.” Left checked and the supporter will be agreeing to contribute every month.

The tactic, roundly criticized by campaign finance experts as deceptive, was also employed by the Trump campaign from September until the 2020 election to shore up its dwindling coffers. Continue reading.

DFL Party Statement on Minnesota Republicans’ Votes to Keep a Dangerous Bigot on Key House Committees

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA  – Today, the Minnesota DFL Party condemned Representatives Hagedorn, Emmer, Fischbach, and Stauber for voting to keep Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on several key House Committees after her dangerous, extremist, and cruel behaviors and beliefs came to light.

Despite the Minnesota Republican delegation’s “no” votes, the House removed Representative Greene from the Budget Committee and the Committee on Education and Labor after it came to light that Greene:

Emmer Sells GOP to Marjorie Taylor Greene for $175,000

Emmer thanked Greene for campaign cash after it was revealed that Greene expressed support for executing prominent Democrats

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, based on new reporting from CNN, the Minnesota DFL Party is sharply criticizing Tom Emmer for selling his party out to Marjorie Taylor Greene in exchange for campaign cash.

CNN recently reported that the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), run by Tom Emmer, hosted a call to demand that Republican Representatives stop criticizing one another. On the call:

Minnesota Republicans in Congress dismiss impeachment even as support grows

Republicans in Minnesota’s congressional delegation all said Tuesday that they are opposed to the impeachment of President Donald Trump in his final days in office, arguing it would be divisive after previously expressing doubts about the legitimacy of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

“I think impeachment is going to only further divide an already divided country,” Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber said in an interview Tuesday. “I think it is time we all tone down our rhetoric and understand that first and foremost, we’re Americans.”

The House is expected to take up articles of impeachment against Trump on Wednesday, in response to his role in inciting last Wednesday’s violent attack on the House and Senate last week. While decrying the violence and calling now for unity, all four Minnesota Republicans previously made public expressions of support for Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud, and three of them signed on to an unsuccessful legal effort to overturn Biden’s win. Minnesota Republicans divided over certifying presidential election results

Once the violent pro-Trump mob was cleared from the nation’s Capitol Wednesday, Minnesota’s Republican members of Congress ended up divided over whether to certify Arizona and Pennsylvania’s electors.

U.S. Reps. Jim Hagedorn and Michelle Fischbach objected to the certification, while Reps. Tom Emmer and Pete Stauber voted to accept them, as lawmakers worked deep into the night to approve the the Electoral College results showing Joe Biden won the presidential election.

By Thursday morning, 121 House Republicans had voted to decertify Arizona’s electors and 138 House Republicans voted to decertify Pennsylvania’s electors. Six senators objected to Arizona’s electors and seven to Pennsylvania’s.  Continue reading.

Rep. Tom Emmer will attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration — but still won’t call him president-elect

Emmer, Klobuchar sparred over election outcome on Thursday.

Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer refused again Thursday to refer to Joe Biden as president-elect, days after the Electoral College certified Biden’s victory and a week after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a GOP bid backed by Emmer to overturn it.

Making his first public comments since both developments, Emmer acknowledged the Electoral College’s recognition of Biden as the winner and said President Donald Trump’s options for challenging that outcome were “diminishing.”

But in a panel discussion with Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Emmer rebuffed attempts by moderator and CBS correspondent Major Garrett to refer to Biden as president-elect. Emmer instead said that Jan. 6, the date Congress will officially count the Electoral College’s votes, marks the end of the line. Continue reading.

DFL Party Statement on Emmer Backing An Attempt to Overturn the 2020 Presidential Election

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement on Congressman Tom Emmer’s decision to sign onto an amicus brief supporting the Texas Attorney General’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election:

“It is appalling that Congressman Tom Emmer would sign onto a lawsuit whose goal is to invalidate the votes of millions of Americans. By supporting this lawsuit, Emmer is working to override the decision of American voters and return a losing presidential candidate to the White House for an illegitimate second term.

“Tom Emmer and numerous other Republican Congressmen and Attorneys General are attempting the closest thing to a coup that our republic has seen in living memory. I am deeply concerned about the damage being wrought by Emmer’s efforts to persuade the American people that our elections and, by extension, the United States government are illegitimate.

“While President-elect Biden is working hard to bring the American people together, Republican leaders are more determined than ever to tear our nation apart. At a time when our nation needs to turn its attention to the pandemic killing our friends and family, the Republicans want to relitigate one of the most decisive presidential elections in modern history. It is shameful and a painful reminder that the Republicans only care about their own self-preservation and power not doing the work of helping those most in need during our darkest hour.”

Emmer, House GOP see majority in reach for 2022

‘High expectations’ after party beat expectations this year

Rep. Tom Emmer, the Minnesota Republican who chaired his party’s House campaign arm this election cycle, sees a GOP majority coming into view in 2022.

Emmer, who is expected to reprise his role as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee for the coming election cycle, already has his sights set on districts where Democrats just barely kept their seats on Election Day. Republicans have history on their side too: The party out of power in the executive branch typically picks up seats in midterm elections.

And with Democrats’ majority in the 117th Congress likely to be razor-slim, Republicans will probably need a net gain in the single digits to retake the gavels in two years. Continue reading.
