Trump faces mounting legal pressure on three fronts

Paul Manafort Convicted on Eight of 18 Federal Counts

Trump’s former campaign manager a key figure in Robert S. Mueller III’s Russia investigation

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, was found guilty on eight of 18 counts, and District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III has declared a mistrial on 10 counts.

Earlier Tuesday, the jury in the tax evasion and bank loan fraud trial appeared stuck on one count, and they indicated so in a note to the judge around 11 a.m.

The note included Tuesday’s date and the following message:

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement in response to Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, being found guilty of multiple crimes:  

“Donald Trump brought a culture of corruption from his campaign to the White House. The special counsel’s investigation has never been a ‘witch hunt,’ and today’s verdict proves it. Paul Manafort wasn’t just Trump’s campaign chair, he was one of his most trusted advisors; the two have known each other for nearly four decades and reportedly spoke to each other nearly 20 times a day.

“As Trump escalates his attacks on the special counsel’s investigation, Republicans in Congress must join Democrats in standing up for the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served.”

Manafort judge says he’s received threats

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The judge in the tax- and bank-fraud trial against onetime Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort said Friday he’s been threatened over the case, denying a request from media outlets to release the names and addresses of the jurors.

Judge T.S. Ellis III said he’s not going to reveal the specifics of the threats he received.

“I have the marshals’ protection,” he said.

Paul Manafort’s lawyers presented their final argument Wednesday, defending the former Trump campaign chairman from 18 charges of tax evasion, bank fraud, and bank fraud conspiracy.

Manafort faces up to 305 years in prison if the Eastern Virginia jury finds him guilty on all charges.

Prosecutors bear the burden of proof in the United States, defense attorney Richard Westling reminded jurors. Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s team, which is prosecuting Manafort, did not reach that evidential threshold, Westling said.

Manafort defense rests without calling witnesses

Attorneys for one-time Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort rested their case Tuesday without calling any witnesses or presenting any further evidence to defend their client, who faces charges of tax evasion and bank fraud that could land him in prison for decades.

Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s prosecution team on Monday rested its case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, wrapping up its evidence and witness testimony in just 10 days.

The defense will decide whether it will call any witnesses Tuesday morning. If it does not, both sides are expected to deliver closing arguments. Then the jury will decide Manafort’s fate.

Prosecutors zeroed in on the loan fraud charges against Manafort, who faces 18 total counts of tax evasion and bank fraud and a maximum 305-year prison sentence if the Eastern Virginia jury finds him guilty.

Citizens Bank mortgage loan assistant Melinda James testified about her communications with Manafort and Rick Gates, the political consulting titan’s longtime deputy, regarding a loan application that contained falsified information to increase Manafort’s chances of getting the request approved.
