Pelosi trashes Trump address: ‘He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech’

The Hill logoSpeaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday trashed President Trump’s raucous State of the Union address while huddling with rank-and-file Democrats, and explained why she dramatically ripped up his speech as he wrapped up his remarks.

“He shredded the truth so I shredded his speech,” Pelosi told House Democrats during a closed-door caucus meeting, according to sources in the room. Like she did the night before, she called his 90-minute address “a manifesto of mistruths.”

“You are supposed to talk about the State of the Union,” Pelosi continued, “not the state of your alleged mind.” Continue reading.

The Trump-Pelosi feud spirals out of control

The relationship between two of the most powerful people in Washington hit an epic new low at the State of the Union address.

It was the snub seen around the country — and in Democrats’ view, President Donald Trump’s State of the Union only went downhill from there.

As Speaker Nancy Pelosi extended her hand just before the start of Trump’s address, the president quickly pivoted and turned his back, leaving the speaker hanging.

Not to be outdone, the normally restrained Pelosi put on a show herself as Trump’s speech wrapped. Standing behind the president, she meticulouslyripped up page after page of the speech, while Trump and other Republicans cheered the end of an address that mostly catered to hardcore GOP partisans. Meet Pelosi’s 7 impeachment managers

The Hill logoSpeaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has named seven House members to serve in high-profile roles as impeachment managers, who will argue the case to impeach President Trump during the Senate trial.

Unlike the past two modern impeachment inquiries into sitting presidents that included only House Judiciary Committee members as managers, Pelosi bucked tradition and selected members across multiple congressional panels to argue the case Trump is unfit for office.

She said one factor has guided her decisionmaking: litigation experience. Continue reading.

Pelosi’s impeachment team represents the diversity of the Democratic caucus

Speaker hand-picked seven managers with a broad swath of backgrounds

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has chosen a small but diverse group of managers to make the House’s case for convicting President Donald Trump on two charges when the Senate impeachment trial begins next week, a move that reflects the membership of her own caucus.

Pelosi announced the managers, which include three women and three minorities, Wednesday morning, just hours before the House is expected to approve them and formally send the two articles of impeachment to the Senate.

The group, who flanked Pelosi during the announced, stands in stark contrast to the 13 white Republican men who managed the articles of impeachment for the House during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, almost exactly 20 years ago. Continue reading.

Trump and Pelosi clash over Iran, impeachment

The Hill logoSpeaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is flexing her muscles at the start of a critical election year by challenging President Trump on two explosive issues — impeachment and Iran — that are sure to exacerbate tensions between Congress and the White House.

Lawmakers in the House will vote this week to limit Trump’s military powers amid intensifying friction with Tehran, marking a new and unexpected front in Democratic efforts to rein in a president they impeached just weeks ago on charges of abusing his office over foreign policy in Ukraine.

The “War Powers Resolution” arrives as questions swirl over when Pelosi will deliver the impeachment articles to the Senate, a step she’s declined to take before Republican leaders outline the trial parameters. Pelosi charged over the weekend that absent a serious effort to gather and weigh new evidence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is merely an “accomplice” to Trump’s misconduct. Nancy Pelosi says House will vote to limit Trump’s war powers on Iran as tensions grow

WASHINGTON – On Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House of Representatives will vote this week on legislation to limit President Donald Trump’s military actions on Iran in the wake of increased tensions between the two countries after Trump ordered an airstrike killing top Iranian General Qasem Soleimanilast Thursday.

In a letter to Democratic members of the House, Pelosi said the “provocative and disproportionate” airstrike on Soleimani “endangered our servicemembers, diplomats and others by risking a serious escalation of tensions with Iran.”

Pelosi thanked lawmakers for their “patriotic leadership” during the tense period.  Continue reading.

Nancy Pelosi delivers brutal takedown after McConnell screed: ‘Frankly, I don’t care what the Republicans say’

AlterNet logoHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on Thursday that she would name managers to take the impeachment of president Donald Trump to the Senate after Republicans set the ground rules for a trial.

In a rant on the Senate floor earlier on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) accused Democrats of undermining the Constitution by impeaching Trump. He gave no indication that Republicans are backing down from their threat not to allow witnesses in Trump’s Senate trial.

Pelosi kicked off her weekly press conference by observing that she and other Democrats have a “spring” in their step after the impeachment vote. Continue reading

Pelosi noncommittal on delivering impeachment articles to Senate

The Hill logoJust moments after the House impeached President Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declined to say when — or even if — Democrats will deliver the articles to the Senate.

“We’ll make that decision as a group, as we always have, as we go along,” Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol.

Despite repeated attempts by reporters to press her on timing, Pelosi declined to commit to sending the two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — across the Capitol, essentially putting the process in limbo as it looms unfinished over the Senate and White House. Inside the bizarre crafting of Trump’s ‘ridiculous’ letter to Pelosi — which left White House lawyers in the dark

AlterNet logoWhite House lawyers were reportedly left out of the drafting of President Donald Trump’s scorching, six-page letter delivered Tuesday to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The rambling letter, which accused Pelosi and House Democrats of engaging in a three-year crusade to undermine the results of the 2016 election, was allegedly drafted last week by some of the president’s closest advisers.

Senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, director of the Office of Legislative Affairs Eric Ueland and Michael Williamson from the chief of staff’s office produced a draft of the letter, without the input of White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, even though he is expected to play a large role in a likely Senate trial. Trump was also revealed to have been very involved in the process. Continue reading

Trump accuses Democrats of subverting democracy in blistering letter to Pelosi

Axios logoPresident Trump sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday accusing Democrats of “perversion of justice” and condemning them for their handling of impeachment, at one point writing: “More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials.”

The big picture: Written on White House letterhead, the letter memorializes Trump’s defense on the eve of his expected impeachment. The House is set to approve articles of impeachment on Wednesday, sending them to the Senate for what is likely to be a speedy trial that ends with Trump’s acquittal.

What he’s saying: Trump rehashed his usual arguments against impeachment, including that Democrats are seeking revenge over their 2016 election loss and that his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “perfect.”

  • “There is nothing I would rather do than stop referring to your party as the Do-Nothing Democrats. Unfortunately, I don’t know that you will ever give me a chance to do so,” Trump wrote.
  • “You are the ones interfering in America’s elections. You are the ones subverting America’s Democracy. You are the ones Obstructing Justice. You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish, personal, political and partisan gain,” he added.  Continue reading
