Ivanka Trump was involved in inauguration’s inflated payments to family business — and so was the president: lawsuit

AlterNet logoThen-President-elect Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka were warned in 2016 that the family business was overcharging the nonprofit presidential inaugural committee — and let it happen anyway, according to a suit filed Wednesday by the Washington, D.C., attorney general.

In the civil complaint, Attorney General Karl Racine charged the Trump inaugural committee and the Trump Organization with using around $1 million of charitable funds to improperly enrich the Trump family.

An experienced event planner who was working for the inaugural, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, raised concerns directly with Donald and Ivanka Trump that the Trump International Hotel in Washington was trying to overcharge the inaugural committee. Continue reading.

‘Extreme privilege’: Ivanka Trump’s speech at tech conference insults and infuriates participants

AlterNet logoIvanka Trump’s appearance at a major technology conference infuriated industry figures before and after she spoke.

Women tech leaders said ahead of the CES gathering in Las Vegas that they were “insulted” by Trump’s invitation, and her speech angered attendees, reported The Guardian.

“Ivanka is not a woman in tech,” said Brianna Wu, a video game developer who is running for Congress in Massachusetts. “She’s not a CEO. She has no background. It’s a lazy attempt to emulate diversity but like all emulation it’s not quite the real thing.” Continue reading.

Ivanka Trump was in touch with Christopher Steele in 2007 and 2008 — and considered using his firm for Trump Organization projects: report

AlterNet logoFormer U.K. intelligence official Christopher Steele is best known for authoring the Steele dossier, which described alleged links between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. But according to a report by ABC News, Steele was in touch with the Trump Organization long before that — specifically, Donald Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump.

ABC News reports that Steele first met Ivanka Trump at a dinner in 2007, which was nine years before her father was elected president of the United States. At the time, she was executive vice president of the Trump Organization — where she managed foreign real estate projects, and some of those projects were in parts of the world where Steele’s security firm, Orbin Business Intelligence, was doing business.

The two of them, according to e-mail exchanges obtained by ABC News, discussed the services that Orbin could possibly offer the Trump Organization in non-U.S. markets. Trump and Steele stayed in touch in the late 2000s and considered working together — although it never came about.

Ivanka Trump thinks whistleblower wants to overturn 2016 election: ‘What was the motivation behind all of this?’

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump’s eldest daughter weighed in on the impeachment inquiry that could swallow his presidency.

Ivanka Trump has largely shied away from discussing the House impeachment inquiry, but she told reporters Friday that she agreed with her father that the investigation was an attempt to overturn the 2016 election, reported Politico.

“Basically since the election, this has been the experience that our administration and our family has been having,” she told the Associated Press while visiting Morocco. “Rather than wait under a year, until the people can decide for themselves based on his record and based on his accomplishments, this new effort has commenced.”

Crying and bullying: Report reveals how Ivanka Trump manipulates the press into giving her good coverage

AlterNet logoAccording to a deep dive into how Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner keep getting flattering “puff pieces” written about them in major media outlets, despite multiple financial scandals, the Daily Beast reports the daughter of President Donald Trump has, over the years, become an expert at working over editors and publishers with tears or threats to get her way.

The Beast’s Hannah Seligson reveals that reporters who have written about the couple, who now serve as unpaid White House advisers, have come to learn that anything that hints of criticism will face quick pushback — both directly and indirectly.

“On August 16, 2016, just a few weeks after his father-in-law, Donald J. Trump, had clinched the Republican nomination for president, Esquire magazine ran a story entitled ‘Jared Kushner’s Second Act.’ It was written by veteran journalist Vicky Ward and exposed a number of less-than-flattering details about the then 35-year-old head of his family’s real estate firm, Kushner Companies,” Seligson writes before adding that Ivanka immediately went up the chain of command to get the story pulled.

Mike Pence’s biographer confirms Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are trying to dump the vice president: ‘That’s all real’

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump is purposefully humiliating his vice president with a series of loyalty tests as his daughter and son-in-law scheme to find a replacement as his 2020 running mate, according to a new biography.

Journalist Tom LoBianco, who has covered Mike Pence’s political career since its very beginning, previewed his new biography, “Piety & Power,” on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“Over the summer he had two terrible events in July,” LoBianco said. “The weird thing where he flies out to New Hampshire, gets called back to the last minute. Then they send him to a detention camp and there is a terrible video of him with a grim face, which should have been Trump. That should have been the president, not the vice president, that’s what VP’s aides and allies are telling me. They see that as Trump yanking on the leash.”

Ivanka Trump is acting as if everything is normal

Washington Post logoIvanka Trump descended upon Bogota, Colombia, this week to talk about women’s empowerment and left us talking about her sleeves. They were voluminous, bell-shaped swaths of green fabric. As the first daughter stood in solemn formation with the Colombian vice president, the sleeves caught a draft and attempted to launch themselves away from her body. Midair, they formed into perfect circles, and this became the hallmark photograph of the trip. Ivanka Trump from the neck up was on a mission of benign diplomacy. From the neck down, flying saucers.

It’s shallow to call attention to a minor clothing malfunction, but this viral sleeve image is what alerted many people to the fact that Ivanka Trump — who, after all, is not an elected official with a dedicated press corps — was in Latin America at all.

To understand exactly what she was doing there, your best hope was to follow the itinerary she unspooled on Instagram: She launched the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs, which, she said, was “designed to equip women with the practical skills they need to create sustainable businesses and to participate more fully in the global economy.” She participated in a wreath-laying ceremony. She met with Colombia’s president and vice president, and then she prepared to head to Argentina and Paraguay for more of the same.

Will Trump Follow His Own ‘Order’ To Stop Selling Chinese Products?

From duffel bags to ties, to plush robes in his hotels, Trump manufactures quite a list of products in China, despite a demand on Friday that American companies stop working with the country.

“Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China,” Trump bellowed on Twitter Friday morning.

Yikes. That’s going to be quite a dilemma for the Trump organization, Trump hotels, and Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.

Here are just a few Trump-branded items manufactured in China, according to a July 2018 NBC News report:

International programs favored by Ivanka Trump and Mike Pence will be spared by federal budget cuts: report

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump has been calling for extensive cuts to foreign aid programs. But on Monday, a senior Trump Administration official told Roll Call that that programs favored by Vice President Mike Pence and White House adviser Ivanka Trump will not be affected by a package of foreign aid cuts.

President Trump is “not going to touch those,” the anonymously quoted official told Roll Call.

The foreign spending package would include cuts to U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development programs. But the programs that will survive the cuts, according to Roll Call, will include programs that promote women’s economic development in other countries (an Ivanka Trump favorite) and programs to protect Christians from persecution in other countries (a Mike Pence favorite).

‘Getting the fundamental facts wrong’: Chicago mayor blasts Ivanka Trump over ‘nonsense tweets’ about inner city gun violence

AlterNet logoCrime in Chicago has been a Republican obsession in recent years, and President Donald Trump’s daughter, White House adviser Ivanka Trump, weighed in on the subject this week — only to receive a testy response from Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Following mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton over the weekend, Ivanka Trump took to Twitter and posted, “As we grieve over the evil mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, let us not overlook that Chicago experienced its deadliest weekend of the year.”

The president’s daughter, in a separate tweet, added that “with seven dead and 52 wounded near a playground in the Windy City” and “little national outrage or media coverage, we mustn’t become numb to the violence faced by inner-city communities every day.”
