Idaho legislative intern reports rape, is ID’d by lawmaker

BOISE, IDAHO — The harassment began soon after a report by a 19-year-old intern, who alleged an Idaho lawmaker raped her, became public.

One state representative sought a copy of the police report and made inquiries into how the young woman herself could be referred for criminal charges for reporting the alleged rape.

Another shared links to a far-right blog post that included the intern’s name, photo and personal details about her life with thousands of people in a newsletter and on social media.

And members of a far-right, anti-government activist group tried to follow and harass the young woman after she was called to testify in a legislative public ethics hearing. Continue reading.

Contraceptive Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act

The following article by Jamila Taylor and Nikita Mhatre was posted on the Center for American Progress website October 6, 2017:

Over the past several months, the Trump-Pence administration, as well as Congress, have attacked women’s health and rights numerous times. Greater access to affordable and effective contraception has been one of the hallmark achievements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But now, the current administration is threatening to limit these gains with the release of sweeping regulations that would allow any employer, insurance plan, school, or individual to use the guise of religious or moral objection to deny access to no-cost contraception.

By requiring coverage for contraceptives with no out-of-pocket costs, the ACA increased women’s access to a wide range of contraceptives. Continue reading “Contraceptive Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act”

Trump Halted Obama’s Equal Pay Rule. What it Means for Working Women

The following article by Suzy Khimm was posted on the NBC News website August 31, 2017:

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has stopped an Obama-era rule requiring large companies to report how much they pay workers by race and gender.

The rule was intended to help close the persistent wage gap between men and women, as well as between racial groups, through greater pay transparency. Continue reading “Trump Halted Obama’s Equal Pay Rule. What it Means for Working Women”

How bills to replace Obamacare would especially harm women

As members of Congress are heading back to their districts over Fourth of July break, the future of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), America’s health care system and millions of Americans continues to hang in the balance.

While the House and Senate version of a proposed ACA repeal differ in the details, their broad outlines essentially boil down to three major items.

Both essentially roll back the Medicaid expansion enacted in the ACA that has benefited more than 10 million Americans.

Both significantly reduce funding for the entire Medicaid program that currently benefits 75 million Americans. Continue reading “How bills to replace Obamacare would especially harm women”

A Catholic Nun Perfectly Explains the Hypocrisy of the “Pro-Life” Argument

This an oldie, but a goodie, with the original content coming from 2004.  However, with the misinformation, and “holier than thou” vibes coming from the mostly male authoritarians empowered by the Trump win, it’s well worth posting again.

The following article by Eleanor Sheehan was posted on the Popsugar website February 4, 2017:

A Catholic nun’s explanation of the term “pro-life” from 2004 is resurfacing after recent antiabortion events. On PBS’s Now With Bill Moyers, Sister Joan Chittister explained why being against abortion doesn’t mean you’re pro-life.

Here’s the full quote:

“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”

Rep. Brat: “… Women are in my grill”

Republicans and women have had a strained relationship for decades. Rep. Brat, who defeated Eric Cantor, was recorded speaking at a recent conservative group. It will do nothing to improve that:

If you’re a woman, if you have a wife, daughter, mother, aunt, niece, good friend who happens to be a woman, this is something you should pay attention to.

The GOP Needs a Lesson on Women’s Equality Day

classroomOn Aug. 26, the Democratic Party celebrated Women’s Equality Day. Ninety five years ago, women won the right to vote, guaranteeing them one of the most basic rights available to an American citizen.

While Democrats are fighting to protect women’s rights every day, it occurs to us that the GOP presidential candidates are in serious need of a lesson on women’s equality. When it comes to paid leave, equal pay, women’s health, and the importance of raising the minimum wage, the GOP candidates don’t have a clue!

So as a favor to anyone who has the chance to school these candidates on equal rights, we hope you find the following lesson plan helpful.
