The GOP push to revisit 2020 has worrisome implications for future elections

Donald Trump’s “big lie” has spawned a movement that under the guise of assuring election integrity threatens to do the opposite, potentially affecting the election process with questionable challenges that could block or delay the certification of results and undermine an essential pillar of democratic governance.

Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 results has kept alive the fiction that the election was stolen or the process was deeply corrupted. That fiction — fueled by conspiracy theories — has encouraged members of his party, elected officials and ordinary citizens, to take steps to address this; these actions could lead to worse outcomes in the future.

For some Americans, the 2020 election isn’t over, as unsubstantiated claims of fraud or widespread irregularities prompt continuing efforts to reexamine ballots and voting machines. Continue reading.

New Poll: Arizona Voters Reject 2020 Election ‘Audit’

National Memo logo

A majority of likely voters in Arizona oppose the audit state Senate Republicans forced of some 2.1 million ballots cast in the state’s 2020 presidential elections, according to a poll released Thursday by a GOP consulting firm in the state, a fact Republican analysts say could be problematic for the party in the coming midterm elections.

The poll found 55 percent of voters don’t support the hand recount of some 2.1 million ballots in Maricopa County, the state’s largest. Democrats overwhelmingly oppose it, but so do 68 percent of unaffiliated voters.

What’s more, 44.5 percent of likely voters say they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supported the audit, leading Chuck Coughlin, a Republican who is the president and CEO of the firm that conducted the poll, to say it proves the audit is a political liability for the GOP. Reporter catches a Republican who allegedly went to the Capitol riot counting ballots in the shady AZ audit

This week, Arizona has had a blatantly partisan, Republican-inspired ‘audit’ of Maricopa County’s votes in the 2020 presidential election. And one of the people seen counting ballots, according to reporter Brahm Resnik, was former Arizona State Rep. Anthony Kern — a far-right Republican who was in Washington, D.C. on January 6 for former President Donald Trump’s infamous “Stop the Steal” rally.

The recount in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, was ordered by Republicans in the Arizona State Senate and has been conducted by the Florida-based firm Cyber Ninjas — with One America News, a cable channel that prides itself on being to the right of Fox News, handling the livestream. Arizona Democrats have been slamming the recount as a pointless farce, noting that the election results in that state were certified by conservative Republican Gov. Doug Ducey last year and were already verified repeatedly.

In other words, now-President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in Arizona was thoroughly vetted and settled. Regardless, Republicans in the Arizona State Senate wanted another audit more than five months after Biden won the state. Continue reading.

The report came from the Arizona Republic‘s Jen Fifield, who tweeted Friday that she witnessed the pen issue and mentioned it to Doug Logan, the leader of the firm “Cyber Ninjas” handling the audit.

There’s now a concern that the Cyber Ninjas could have used their pens to change the votes on the ballots that they’re proposing to “audit.”

Laurie Roberts, who wrote a piece exposing Cyber Ninjas for the Republic spoke to Hayes about the company being given a blank check by the state’s officials to do whatever they want. Continue reading.
