Jim Jordan attacks Democrats for wanting to make sure every vote is counted

Jordan sought to defend Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s changes to the Postal Service, which could cause voters to be disenfranchised.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) attacked his House Democratic colleagues for wanting to make sure every vote in the 2020 election is counted.

Jordan made the attack during a congressional hearing on Monday with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, whose changes to the U.S. Postal Service operative procedure have caused so many delays that even the service is warning Americans their mail-in ballots may not be counted due to slowdowns.

“We know what this is about. We all know what this is about,” Jordan said, referring to the hearing the House Oversight Committee was holding to demand answers from DeJoy about why mail has been delayed since he took the helm of the agency. Continue reading.

The GOP’s Alternate Convention Reality

As protests for racial justice continue, the coronavirus rages and a hurricane looms, Republicans present President Trump as the protector-in-chief.

WITH AMERICA ON EDGE Wednesday night over a looming, powerful hurricane, unrest over the shooting of African American Jacob Blake by Wisconsin police and the coronavirus pandemic, Republicans at their national convention Wednesday night presented an alternate reality, downplaying those crises and casting President Donald Trump as the protector-in-chief.

The theme of the third night of the Republican National Conventions was “Land of Heroes,” and the speakers – including several veterans – underscored the planned message. Headliner Vice President Mike Pence made his speech from Ft. McHenry, site of the 1814 battle that inspired the national anthem.

Barely mentioned was Hurricane Laura, which was headed toward the Gulf Coast as the convention (much of it taped) continued. Pence called for prayers, and a promise that the federal government would respond, but other speakers largely ignored the looming disaster. Continue reading.

Trump Installs Massive New Fence Around White House Ahead Of RNC Speech

During the George Floyd protests President Donald Trump had fencing placed around the White House and even tear gassed peaceful protestors standing in the park across the street so he could have a photo-op.

But according to NBC News’ Garrett Haake and many people on the ground in Washington, D.C., the White House is putting up even more fencing than they installed a few months ago.

Why? Continue reading.

Night 3 riddled with falsehoods as Pence takes GOP convention stage

Washington Post logo

The third night of the Republican National Convention yet again offered a cascade of false claims, especially in Vice President Pence’s speech. Here are 20 claims that caught our attention. As is our practice, we do not award Pinocchios for a roundup of statements made during convention events.

“Before the first case of coronavirus spread within the United States, President Trump took the unprecedented step of suspending all travel from China. That action saved an untold number of American lives.”

— Vice President Pence

Pence greatly overstates the impact of Trump’s action, which did not halt all travel from China and was not much different from what other countries did. Continue reading.

RNC fact check: Questioning economic and tax claims

Exaggerating economic assumptions and some misleading claims about Biden’s tax plan

The fact-checking fodder included claims about the economy, the Democratic nominee and the president’s actions.

Here is the analysis:

Kudlow’s False Economic History

Kudlow painted a false picture, claiming Trump inherited “a stagnant economy on the front end of recession” and then adding, “The economy was rebuilt in three years.”

But the fact is, as we wrote on the day Trump took office, Trump inherited “an economy experiencing steady if unspectacular growth in output, jobs and incomes.” After the terrible 2007-2009 recession that Obama inherited, the economy had posted six straight years of economic growth and was about to post a seventh. Trump Hotel At Center Of RNC Festivities

The Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., is the place for Republicans to see and be seen during convention week.

WASHINGTON ― Republicans had to cancel their big convention celebration in North Carolina ― and then Florida ― this year, but that doesn’t mean the festivities were all called off. The center of gravity instead moved to Washington, particularly the Trump International Hotel, where donors are being treated to panels, receptions and even a bourbon tasting with their favorite Trump World personalities.

Much of the action of a convention goes on outside of the official proceedings, in the parties and fundraisers around town. At least some of those events are still going on this week, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The big event planned for Wednesday is a reception with Donald Trump Jr., his girlfriend and Trump fundraiser Kimberly Guilfoyle, Tiffany Trump, her boyfriend Michael Boulos, and John Pence, the nephew of the vice president.  Continue reading.

Fact check: Night 3 of the Republican National Convention

The third night of the RNC featured Lara Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Night 3 of the Republican National Convention featured a number of elected officials, second lady Karen Pence and others who made the case for President Donald Trump’s re-election during a program focused on “law and order” as protests grow over the police shooting of a Black man in Wisconsin.

Vice President Mike Pence also accepted his renomination with a speech praising Trump for his leadership, but he frequently distorted the facts.

NBC News fact checked the speeches in real time. Continue reading.

Kellyanne Conway’s RNC Speech Praises Trump As Champion Of Women

Conway made a surprise announcement about stepping down from her top role in the misogynistic leader’s administration earlier in the week.

Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, used her time in the spotlight at the Republican National Convention to paint the president as a supposedly kindhearted champion of women.

“A woman in a leadership role still can seem novel,” Conway said. In 2016, she became the first woman to run a successful U.S. presidential campaign.

Later, she claimed to have “seen firsthand many times the president comforting and encouraging a child who has lost a parent, a parent who has lost a child, a worker who lost his job, an adolescent who has lost her way to drugs.” Continue reading.

RNC Video Showing Rioters In “Biden’s America” Is Actually Spain

The video is part of a pattern of Trump and his supporters portraying BLM protests as violent.

On the first night of the Republican National Convention, the party aired a segment featuring Catalina and Madeline Lauf warning of dire consequences if Democratic candidate Joe Biden is elected president.

“This is a taste of Biden’s America,” one sister says in a voiceover as images of protests play onscreen. “The rioting, the crime. Freedom is at stake now and this is going to be the most important election of our lifetime.”

The problem is that one of the images in the segment doesn’t show the US at all — it shows Spain. Continue reading.
