The Trump brothers’ claims that they no longer profit from foreign deals

Washington Post logo“When my father became commander in chief of this country, we got out of all international business.”

— Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization, in an interview on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle,” Oct. 15

“We’ve been international businesspeople for decades, but we can’t even do those kinds of deals anymore. We can’t even continue, and because we chose not to, because we didn’t think it was appropriate. So that’s the double standard. The media said, ‘Oh, you’re enriching yourselves.’ We’re like, ‘We literally stopped.’ ”

— Donald Trump Jr., executive vice president of the Trump Organization, in an interview on “Fox and Friends,” Oct. 30

The president’s sons say the Trump business empire no longer makes money from foreign deals.

It’s a false claim whether you take Eric Trump’s version (“we got out of all international business”) or Donald Trump Jr.’s formulation (“we literally stopped”).

Eric Trump’s Four-Pinocchio claim that the Obamacare website cost more than Trump’s border barrier Add to list

Washington Post logo“President Trump’s wall costs less than the Obamacare website. Let that sink in, America.”

— Quote attributed to comedian Tim Allen in an Instagram post by Eric Trump

Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons, has quite a following on social media, so his posts attract a lot of attention. This particular one achieved nearly 80,000 likes within days.

But there are two big problems. First, it’s factually incorrect. Second, while Allen is a conservative, he did not say this. A query to the Trump Organization, where Trump is executive vice president, for comment did not receive a response.

The Facts

First, let’s deal with Allen. There was a Tim Allen — unrelated to the actor — who on Aug. 25 posted a lengthy diatribe on Facebook that included this line. This Tim Allen describes himself as a jewelry technician who lives in Franklin, Va. But that did not stop thousands of people from distributing his post as coming from the actor.

Eric Trump mocked for attacking Washington Post reporter’s standard attempt at getting story

AlterNet logoEric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump, attempted to humiliate Washington Post journalist David Farenthold for sending a letter to the Trump Organization that — despite his disparaging characterization — was in fact standard journalistic procedure.

On Friday the president’s son tweeted “These are the tactics used by the @WashingtonPost. @JeffBezos – you should be very proud… ?” He also included a copy of a letter ostensibly written by Farenthold in which the journalist offered members of the Trump Organization his contact information, offered to speak with potential sources on background and provided them with an encrypted link where they could send documents anonymously.

“Ummm, Eric. This is called journalism,” Ahmed Baba, the editor-in-chief of Rantt Media, tweeted in response to the supposed outrage expressed by the president’s son. “Speaking to sources on background and anonymously sourcing documents to expose corruption is par for the course. I think you should learn how to use this other neat thing called Google before you tweet.”

New York’s attorney general filed suit against President Trump and his three eldest children Thursday, alleging “persistently illegal conduct” at the president’s personal charity and saying that Trump had repeatedly misused the nonprofit organization to pay off his businesses’ creditors, to decorate one of his golf clubs and to stage a multimillion-dollar giveaway at 2016 campaign events.

In the suit, Attorney General Barbara Underwood asked a state judge to dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation. She asked that its remaining $1 million in assets be distributed to other charities and that Trump be forced to pay at least $2.8 million in restitution and penalties. Eric Trump said three years ago the Trump Organization had “all the funding we need out of Russia” for its golf course projects, according to an author recounting the story of a 2014 meeting with Donald Trump and his son.

The author also said Donald Trump “sort of tossed off that he had access to $100m”.

The author’s comments – which Eric Trump later said were “completely fabricated” – prompted widespread interest in the media and online. Continue reading “Eric Trump said family golf courses attracted Russian funding, author claims”

Trump’s sons recommend the high road they usually don’t take

The following article by Callum Borchers was posted on the Washington Post website June 7, 2017:

President Trump’s adult sons think it is time for everyone to take the high road in political discourse. Just don’t expect them to lead the way.

“Morals have flown out the window,” Eric Trump lamented on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Tuesday night. “We deserve so much better than this as a country, and, you know, it’s so sad.”

In the same interview, Eric Trump said this of his father’s critics: “To me, they’re not even people.” Continue reading “Trump’s sons recommend the high road they usually don’t take”

Eric and Ivanka Trump deliver spirited defense of nepotism

The following article by Aaron Rupar was posted on the ThinkProgress website April 5, 2017:

“Nepotism is kind of a factor of life.”

In an interview with Forbes published Tuesday, Eric Trump characterizes his father’s proclivity to put his family members in positions of power as a phenomenon similar to the sun setting each evening.

“Nepotism is kind of a factor of life,” Eric said. “We might be here because of nepotism, but we’re not still here because of nepotism. You know, if we didn’t do a good job, if we weren’t competent, believe me, we wouldn’t be in this spot.”

Eric seems to think he and his brother find themselves running the Trump Organization because of their competence, but there might be another reason. By putting his kids in charge of a business he still owns, receives quarterly briefings about, and can still even draws profits from, President Trump has ensured that the Trump Organization still operates for his benefit.
