Edina’s youth COVID-19 cases surge; 569 new Minnesota cases

St. Louis County also reports its first single-day surge in COVID-19 involving young people, and not long-term care facilities.

A surge in COVID-19 cases in Edina, particularly among teenagers, prompted an appeal from Mayor Jim Hovland on Monday for people to take greater precautions such as wearing masks in public.

The city reported 227 cases from March 12 to June 24, but then 154 just since June 25, the mayor said. The median age of COVID-19 cases was 57 years in the first time frame but only 20 years in the second.

“We need our young people to be more careful about what they’re doing,” he said in a video, “and we’ve been finding out how they’ve been spreading it. Contact tracing by public health officials shows that our young people have been exposed to the novel coronavirus at house parties, bonfires, cabin trips, and organized sports. Simply put, its (sic) just from socializing.” Continue reading.

University of Minnesota, Edina and Rochester announce new face mask requirements

Officials at the University of Minnesota as well as the cities of Edina and Rochester on Monday announced new requirements on wearing face masks in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The Edina City Council decided to move forward with a policy requiring face masks in all city facilities and in any indoor public place where proper social distancing is difficult.

“While I personally don’t like the idea of a mandate, I think this is something we should do,” Mayor Jim Hovland said at the meeting. Continue reading.

The Edina and Mankato city councils will each hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss citywide mask ordinances. Edina is considering a “possible citywide masking policy,” while Mankato will weigh in on creating an ordinance to require masks or launching a campaign to encourage people to wear face coverings in indoor public spaces.

Rochester’s council will vote on Mayor Kim Norton’s amendment to the existing emergency declaration, which would require people to wear a face covering while in city facilities. Continue reading.

Rep. Heather Edelson (HD49A) Update: May 30, 2020 Curfew

Dear Neighbors,

We know concerned community members want to help during these difficult times. The Department of Public Safety is asking all local communities to NOT be in the streets tonight, for any reason.

  • The situation has shifted. The coordinated response tonight will be different.
  • The coordinated National Guard, State Patrol, and Law enforcement presence will triple in size – and it continues to grow.
  • This response is to address a sophisticated network of urban warfare. We expect the individuals involved to use deadly force – both with fires and other weapons.
  • A primary tactic they have used is to locate civilians and use them as both shields from law enforcement and distractions to effective response.
  • YOU MUST STAY IN PLACE.
