Trump’s own national security officials now believe him ‘delusional’ and ‘a danger to’ the United States

AlterNet logoYet another constitutional crisis appears to be on our hands: CNN is now reporting that based on “hundreds” of calls between Donald Trump and foreign leaders, multiple of Trump’s own senior officials came to the conclusion that “that the President himself posed a danger to the national security of the United States.”

CNN cites White House and intelligence officials “intimately familiar” with the conversations, and reports former top Trump officials “including national security advisers H.R. McMaster and John Bolton, Defense Secretary James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and White House chief of staff John Kelly” conclude “the President was often ‘delusional’” in his conversations with foreign leaders.

That Trump regularly attacked former U.S. presidents on the calls is unsurprising, as is the news that Turkish strongman Recep Erdogan was one of Trump’s most frequent contacts. But Trump “seemed to continually conflate his own personal interests,” especially his reelection, “with the national interest.” Continue reading.

Here are 7 stunning details from a new report about John Bolton’s explosive book

AlterNet logoThough the Trump administration is making a show of trying to stop it, former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s book is already making waves.

The New York Times, which received an advance copy of the book before its official publication next week, published a report on Wednesday laying out some of its key revelations.

While Bolton himself is in many ways a duplicitous and untrustworthy figure, his allegations about President Donald Trump are worth taking seriously. We’ve already seen that much of what is going on behind closed doors is nefarious and detrimental to the country — and a person with Bolton’s access would likely know many of the White House’s darkest secrets.

Tumultuous week in US rattles allies around the globe

The Hill logoU.S. allies around the world have reacted with shock at the death of George Floyd and President Trump’s threat to use military force to crack down on protests, dealing another blow to their already bruised relationship with Washington.

Their alarm was illustrated by a press conference Tuesday by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, held one day after Trump used pepper balls and smoke bombs to disperse a crowd protesting Floyd’s death in front of the White House. Asked about his response to the forcible removal of demonstrators, Trudeau paused for 21 seconds before answering.

“We all watch in horror and consternation at what is going on in the United States,” he told reporters. “It is time to pull people together.” Continue reading.

This is pretty nuts’: Kayleigh McEnany struggles to defend Trump’s vicious murder conspiracy theory

AlterNet logoWhite House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was forced to defend President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on MSNBC host Joe Scarborough on Tuesday, an unenviable task she nevertheless intentionally signed up for. She desperately tried to divert the attention back to Scarborough — without engaging in the president’s conspiracy theorizing — but offered no credible defense of the president’s conduct.

Trump has been spreading the debunked theory that Scarborough killed a staffer in 2001 while he was in Congress, even though it was determined she died of natural causes. The staffer’s widower wrote a released a letter on Tuesday pleading with Twitter to take down the president’s offensive tweets promoting the thoery. He said he was “angry,” “frustrated,” and “grieved” by the president’s promotion of the harmful allegations. Trump is perverting his late wife’s memory, he said, and he fears her niece and nephews will encounter these attacks.

When asked about the letter, McEnany said she wasn’t sure if the president had seen it. But she said their “hearts” are with the woman’s family “at this time.” It was a deeply ironic comment because the only particularly traumatizing thing about “this time” for the family is the president’s attacks, which come nearly two decades after the woman’s death.
