As Biden addressed the world, an unknown man in uniform stood watch over his son Beau’s grave

As the world tuned in to watch President Biden deliver his inaugural address at the Capitol on Wednesday, a lone man in uniform carried out a silent vigil more than 110 miles away.

Kneeling on the chilly ground as winds whipped through the Delaware cemetery, the man clasped his hands and bowed his head before the grave of Biden’s late son, Beau, for the duration of the speech. His identity remains unknown, as do his reasons for visiting St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church in Wilmington, Del., on Wednesday.

But the poignant scene, which would have gone unnoticed if a reporter from the Delaware News Journal hadn’t stopped by the graveyard to pay her own respects, struck a chord with thousands on Twitter. Continue reading.

Acting Defense secretary says ‘no intelligence’ indicating insider threat to inauguration

Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said Monday that while law enforcement officials are vetting National Guard troops stationed in the nation’s capital, authorities have “no intelligence indicating an insider threat” to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration this week.

“As is normal for military support to large security events, the Department will vet National Guardsmen who are in Washington, D.C.,” Miller said in a statement.“While we have no intelligence indicating an insider threat, we are leaving no stone unturned in securing the capital.”

“This type of vetting often takes place by law enforcement for significant security events. However, in this case the scope of military participation is unique,” Miller continued. Continue reading.

DFL Party Leaders Call on Republicans to Correct Election-Related Misinformation Ahead of Biden Inauguration

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, DFL Party leaders held a press conference calling on Minnesota Republican leaders to correct the election-related disinformation they have spread and say to their base, with no hedging or qualifying, that the 2020 elections were free and fair and that Joe Biden is the President-elect.

A video of the press conference is available here.

“It is imperative that Minnesota Republicans tell their base the truth: the 2020 elections were not stolen, there was not widespread voter fraud, and Joe Biden is the legitimate President-elect of the United States of America,” said Ken Martin, Chairman of the Minnesota DFL Party. “We cannot stand idly by and allow threats of violence to consume our political system. We are better than this. Republican leaders must speak out now, not just to denounce violence but to repudiate the lies fueling that violence.”

D.C. lockdown for inauguration to start Wednesday

Axios logo

In an escalation of inauguration security following the Capitol riot, federal authorities plan to lock down a massive swath of downtown Washington on Wednesday, six days earlier than originally planned.

Why it matters: The earlier shutdown is based on warnings about pre-inauguration demonstrations planned for this weekend in capitals throughout the country, as well as tighter security after the Capitol siege.

  • The Department of Homeland Security announced that the window for the National Special Security Event, which will involve tens of thousands of National Guard troops and federal law enforcement personnel, will begin Jan. 13, rather than the previously scheduled Jan, 19, the day before the inauguration. Trump will skip Biden inauguration

Axios logo

President Trump tweeted on Friday that he will not be attending President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Why it matters: It’s a break from tradition that comes as Trump faces massive backlash over the storming of the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters.

The big picture: Trump released a video Thursday night acknowledging that a “new administration will be inaugurated on Jan. 20,” and stating that he will focus on a “seamless transition of power” — one day after his continued and baseless claims of a “rigged” election led to the violent insurrection at the Capitol. Inaugural Ceremony to Go Forward Without Public Attendance

Members will get one ticket for self, one guest

President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will take place without broad public attendance, the congressional committee in charge of the planning announced Wednesday.

The changes, which are the latest adjustment to Capitol operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, mean there will not be a great dispute about crowd sizes.

Each member of the 117th Congress will receive a ticket for themselves and one guest, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies said. For a typical inauguration, the committee would provide about 200,000 tickets, distributed to congressional offices to give to constituents, often through lottery systems. Continue reading.

Biden Plans Safe Inaugural As Trump Keeps Hosting ‘Superspreaders’

President-elect Joe Biden is planning to implement public safety measures for his Jan. 20 inauguration, in light of the raging coronavirus pandemic — a stark contrast to Donald Trump, who has continued to host potential superspreader events even as cases spike across the country.

Biden’s inaugural committee issued a statement on Tuesday outlining initial plans for the event, urging “Americans to stay home, refrain from travel, and limit gatherings during the inauguration.”

“President-elect Biden’s unwavering commitment to the safety of the American people is our North Star as we plan an inauguration that protects public health while honoring inaugural traditions and engaging Americans across the country,” said Maju Varghese, the committee’s executive director. Trump Schemes To Launch 2024 Campaign At Biden’s Inauguration

President Donald Trump may be leaving the White House in the very near future, but it does not look like he will be going away, as promised, anytime soon.

The lame duck president is already strategizing for a 2024 presidential run to regain control of the White House, according to The Daily Beast. The publication reports that insiders close to the situation have revealed details about the president’s latest plot.

It appears Trump has no intention of moving on from the presidential election defeat. While most former presidents move on with their lives after leaving the White House, insiders suggest Trump is ultimately trying to stay in the spotlight. The president’s assessment is reportedly based on television ratings as opposed to actual professional experience and the ability to effectively govern the country. Continue reading.
