Obama: ‘You are right to be concerned’

The following article by Edward-Isaac Dovere was posted on the Politico.com website June 29, 2018:

In his first public comments in months, the former president talks about anger, regrets — and what the Republicans are doing right.

“All these people that are out here kvetching and wringing their hands and stressed and anxious and constantly watching cable TV and howling at the moon, ‘What are we going to do?,’ their hair’s falling out, they can’t sleep,” former President Barack Obama said Thursday. “The majority of the American people prefer a story of hope.” Credit: Hannah Peters/Getty Images

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Barack Obama’s message to Democrats: Stop dreaming of him.

Speaking at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser Thursday here in the lush backyard of two party megadonors, Obama warned of a country and world on the brink — “you are right to be concerned,” he told the crowd — but said they’d flub their chance to change that if they kept pining for a magical savior.

“Do not wait for the perfect message, don’t wait to feel a tingle in your spine because you’re expecting politicians to be so inspiring and poetic and moving that somehow, ‘OK, I’ll get off my couch after all and go spend the 15-20 minutes it takes for me to vote,’” Obama said in his first public comments in months, which only a few reporters and no cameras were allowed in for. “Because that’s part of what happened in the last election. I heard that too much.”

“Boil it down,” Obama said, reiterating an argument he made on the campaign trail for Ralph Northam in 2017 about the existential challenge Trump poses to America. “If we don’t vote, then this democracy doesn’t work.”

He almost accepted some of the blame for the state of the party, though he framed it less as the DNC atrophying from years of benign neglect while he was in the White House and being saddled with his reelection campaign debt and more as people making the mistake of falling too much in love with him. The following article by Mary Papenfuss was posted on the Huffington Post website April 14, 2018:

Ximena Barreto has been placed on leave as the agency examines her shocking posts that also targeted Hillary Clinton.

A political appointee at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shared a social network post last year evoking lynchings, saying that America’s forefathers would have “hung” Barack Obama — and Hillary Clinton — for treason. Watch Fox News Personalities Slam Obama And Praise Trump Over The Same Thing

The following article by Ed Mazza was posted on the Huffington Post website March 16, 2018:

Fox News personalities have been largely praising President Donald Trump over his plans to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Some on the conservative network even said he should get a Nobel Peace Prize if he makes a deal.

But during the 2008 presidential campaign, when then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama said he was willing to meet “not just with our friends, but with our enemies,” many on Fox News ― including some of those same personalities ― slammed him for it.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder is ramping up his efforts to reshape Republican-drawn congressional district maps.

Holder’s plan focuses on “trifectas” — states where Republicans control both the governor’s mansion and both legislative chambers, giving them total control over the redistricting process. Holder laid out his strategy Wednesday to reporters at a Washington breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. Early Wednesday, Fox News published an explosive new story alleging President Obama sought detailed briefings about the Clinton email investigation. The report is based on texts between FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page released by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security on Tuesday.

In a text sent on September 2, 2016, Page tells Strozok that “potus wants to know everything we’re doing.” Fox News claims this text “raises questions about Obama’s personal involvement in the Clinton email investigation.” Continue reading “Fox News’ latest ‘bombshell’ on Obama and the FBI is a total fraud”

Trump claims credit for what is still mostly Obama’s economy

The following article by Christopher Rugaber was posted on the Associated Press website January 17, 2018:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump relentlessly congratulates himself for the healthy state of the U.S. economy, with its steady growth, low unemployment, busier factories and confident consumers.

But in the year since Trump’s inauguration, most analysts tend to agree on this: The economy remains essentially the same sturdy one he inherited from Barack Obama.

Growth has picked up, but it’s not yet clear if it can sustain a faster expansion. Hiring and wage growth actually slowed slightly from Obama’s last year in office. Consumers and businesses are much more optimistic, but their spending has yet to move meaningfully higher. Continue reading “Trump claims credit for what is still mostly Obama’s economy”

Obama: Presidents need to watch their behavior

Barack Obama’s advice on the presidency: Watch your behavior — because everyone else is watching it, and taking cues from it.

“One of the things that Michelle figured out, in some ways faster than I did — was part of your ability to lead the country doesn’t have to do with legislation, doesn’t have to do with regulations, it has to do with shaping attitudes, shaping culture, increasing awareness,” Obama said in a conversation recorded last fall but released on Friday as the first episode of David Letterman’s new Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.”

As he’s done since the end of the 2016 election, Obama ducked any direct comment on President Donald Trump, even when prompted by Letterman directly in the friendly hourlong interview. Continue reading “Obama: Presidents need to watch their behavior”

One of the nation’s oldest holiday celebrations took place Thursday evening on the Ellipse next to White House — the annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree. It is a tradition that dates back to the Coolidge administration in the 1920s and was President Trump’s and first lady Melania Trump’s first time taking part in the event since moving into the White House.

The ceremony comes a day after the president reiterated a pledge he’s echoed many times since becoming a candidate in 2015 to end the so-called war on Christmas. At a speech Wednesday in Missouri to publicize the GOP tax overhaul expected to come up for a vote in the Senate this week, President Trump kicked off his remarks by saying: “I told you that we would be saying Merry Christmas again, right?”

Here’s a closer look at the president’s claim. Continue reading “FACT CHECK: Trump’s Pledge To Restore ‘Merry Christmas’ To The White House Facebook Twitter Flipboard Email”

Trump’s bizarre claim that Obama ‘never got to land’ in the Philippines

The following article by Glenn Kessler was posted on the Washington Post website November 15, 2017:

President Trump’s claim doesn’t make much sense — Obama canceled a meeting, not a trip, and by then, he had already traveled to the Philippines twice as president. (Meg Kelly/The Washington Post)

“As you know, we were having a lot of problems with the Philippines. The relationship with the past administration was horrible, to use a nice word. I would say ‘horrible’ is putting it mildly. You know what happened. Many of you were there, and you never got to land. The plane came close but it didn’t land.”
— President Trump, remarks to reporters after East Asian Summit in Manila, Nov. 14, 2017

“We then go to the Philippines, which was a rough trip the last time. That was a rough presidential trip, but this won’t be.”
