Brutal summer for Republicans

The following article by Scott Wong and Alexander Bolton was posted on the Hill website August 31, 2018:

t’s been a brutal summer for the GOP.

President Trump’s secret meeting, and stunning press conference, with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Felony convictions for Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and a guilty plea from his longtime personal fixer, Michael Cohen. Returning flags atop the White House to full-staff less than 48 hours after Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) death.

Some Republicans say the president’s actions these past few months amount to a series of costly errors that distract from the party’s strong economic message and raise more doubts about whether the GOP can keep control of the House — or even the Senate — in the upcoming midterm elections.

Booming Economy May Be Little Felt as Voters Decide

The following articl by Ben Casselman and Jim Tankersley was posted on the New York Times website August 17, 2018:

Republicans are telling you that tax cuts and roaring economic growth are going to stop any “blue wave” in the midterm elections. Democrats say the lack of wage growth, even as corporate profits surge, will impel voters to change leadership in Congress.

It’s not that simple.

A new survey of nearly 10,000 American adults shows that the strong economy is rallying Republicans and maybe swaying some independents. But many voters still aren’t feeling the benefits of robust growth, and the tax overhaul passed last year looks as likely to hurt Republicans at the polls as help them.

Worst-case scenario for House GOP is 70-seat wipeout

The following article by Reid Wilson was posted on the Hill website August 17, 2018:

Democratic enthusiasm and a GOP malaise surrounding President Trumphave set the stage for a potentially devastating midterm election for the House Republican majority.

In a series of special elections mostly in reliably GOP districts, Democratic candidates have routinely outperformed Hillary Clinton’s share of the vote from 2016.

At the same time, Republican candidates have underperformed President Trump’s vote share in all but two special elections.

DFL Chairman Ken Martin statement on Sen. Tina Smith primary win

“Sen. Tina Smith has served Minnesotans well in Washington, D.C. and for many years before as a public servant. Her strong and decisive victory tonight is a testament to the trust that Minnesota voters have in Tina to represent their interests. Minnesota voters know that Tina is fighting every day to solve the problems that they are facing – whether it’s taking on big pharma to lower the cost of medicine, passing a bipartisan farm bill, or fighting to protect the pensions of hard working Minnesotans.”
