Dave Hutchinson Poised To Become First Openly Gay Sheriff In Midwest

The 39-year-old progressive appears to have narrowly defeated pro-Trump Sheriff Rich Stanek in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Dave “Hutch” Hutchinson on Wednesday appeared to have narrowly defeated three-term incumbent Sheriff Rich Stanek in Hennepin County, Minnesota, all but guaranteeing his title as the first openly gay sheriff in the Midwest.

After an incredibly tight race, the 39-year-old veteran police officer declared an unofficial victory over Stanek, a President Donald Trump supporter whose critics say he was too amenable to federal immigration authorities.

By early Wednesday morning, 100 percent of the county’s precincts had reported their election results, suggesting Hutchinson had won roughly 2,300 more votes than Stanek, a former Minnesota House Republican.

What’s at stake in Tuesday’s election? When it comes to state offices, pretty much everything

So what’s at stake in Tuesday’s election when it comes to Minnesota constitutional offices and the state Legislature?

Kind of a lot — including the chance for Republicans to be elected to a statewide position for the first time in eight years, and for Democrats to regain control of the state Legislature.

Governor

Incumbent Gov. Mark Dayton had long let it be known he had no interest in seeking a third term in the office, which meant lots of people kicked the tires on possible campaigns for governor over the last two years. Open seats are rare enough that anybody who sees themselves as governor had to give it a look.

Phillips represents regular voters

The source of campaign contributions is a trustworthy indicator of who will truly represent residents of the 3rd Congressional District: incumbent Erik Paulsen or his challenger Dean Phillips.

Paulsen currently occupies the eye-popping rank of No. 4 among reps who have accepted the most PAC money. That’s right — of 435 U.S. House reps, only three take more outside money than Erik Paulsen. He’s raked in over $2.6 million from political action committees. PACs are funded primarily by corporations and billionaires outside our district, and exist for one reason only: to influence elections and legislation.

Dean Phillips? Zero PAC money. Sixty-seven thousand individual contributors, donating an average of $33 each, have provided 100 percent of his campaign funds. And that’s who Phillips will listen to before casting votes in Congress: his constituents. Day 4 of the Phillips 40-City Coffee and Conversation Tour

EXCELSIOR, MN – Dean Phillips will continue his 5-day, 40-city “Coffee and Conversation Tour” from November 2nd to Election Day, November 6th.

Phillips’s campaign for Congress is based on the idea that representation begins with listening, and that change begins with conversation. Phillips has been traveling the district in his Government Repair Truck for a year and a half, meeting with and hearing from voters of all backgrounds at over 120 public events, making this a fitting close to his campaign.

Trump Fails To Distract Voters With ‘Conspiracy-Theory Laden Stump Speech’

Trump has repeatedly tried and failed to change the conversation ahead of the midterm elections with lies and conspiracies. His “announcement” yesterday was just more of the same. The media and Americans across the country know exactly what Trump’s doing, and they aren’t fooled.

Reporters saw right through Trump’s latest distraction, which was nothing more than a “fear-mongering stump speech.”

Vox: “President Donald Trump got cable news to carry him live and uninterrupted for nearly half an hour from the West Wing Thursday, where he gave what amounted to a fear-mongering stump speech in the final days before the midterm elections.”

Vox’s Laura McGann: “Trump’s giving his conspiracy theory-laden stump speech from the West Wing and it’s being aired on CNN unchallenged.”
