Christopher Wylie warns Congress of “resegregation of society that’s catalyzed by algorithms”

Mr. Wylie goes to Washington to help America better understand what we’re facing from social media

Christopher Wylie testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 16, warning of “resegregation of society that’s catalyzed by algorithms” and speaking at length about how Cambridge Analytica exploited Americans on Facebook.

Wylie, the whistleblower who helped expose Cambridge Analytica’s exploitation of 87 million Facebook users’ data, had met privately with House Democrats last month but the Republican majority refused to allow an open hearing. He has testified before Parliament in the U.K., but yesterday’s hearing was Wylie’s first public appearance in the U.S. He spoke about Cambridge Analytica’s U.S. election work, the systemic failures of tech companies that led to the data breach, and what the future holds if said failures remain unaddressed. Wylie emphasized that Americans are simply unable to opt out of using the internet and that regulation is the only protection available. Senators on the committee asked Wylie about some of Cambridge Analytica’s practices that will likely be adopted by other entities, such as voter suppression ads and predictive algorithms. Intel panel Republicans seem to back away from finding that Russia was not trying to help Trump

The following article by Karoun Demirjian was posted on the Washington Post website March 13, 2018:

House Intelligence Committee Democrats said they will keep investigating Russia and the 2016 election, despite a decision by Republicans to shut down the probe. (Reuters)

The leader of the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation seemed to back off Tuesday from the most surprising finding in the GOP’s report that Russia was not trying to help President Trump, as the panel’s top Democrat trashed the product as a political gift to the White House.

Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R-Tex.) told reporters Tuesday that “it’s clear [Russian officials] were trying to hurt Hillary [Clinton]” by interfering in the 2016 election and that “everybody gets to make up their own mind whether they were trying to hurt Hillary, help Trump, it’s kind of glass half full, glass half empty.” Continue reading “Intel panel Republicans seem to back away from finding that Russia was not trying to help Trump”

House Democrats Are Trying to Reveal 1,000 New Russian Troll Accounts

The following article by Ben Collins and Spencer Ackerman was posted on the Daily Beast website January 25, 2018:

The release of the 1,062 accounts could shine light on how significant Russia’s influence campaign was in the run-up to Donald Trump’s victory.

More than 1,000 now-deleted Twitter accounts attributed by the company to a Kremlin-connected troll farm are now in the hands of legislators investigating Russian interference in the 2016 elections. For the second time in three months, it’s unclear if the public will know if the inflammatory strangers they—and potentially members of the Trump campaign—retweeted and liked were actually Russian imposters.

Twitter revealed late last Friday that it had found 1,062 new accounts controlled or created by St. Petersburg’s infamous Internet Research Agency. That brings the total imposter Twitter accounts discovered by the company thus far up to 3,814. Continue reading “House Democrats Are Trying to Reveal 1,000 New Russian Troll Accounts”

Russians got tens of thousands of Americans to RSVP for their phony political events on Facebook

The following article by Craig Timberg and Elizabeth Dwoskin was posted on the Washington Post website January 25, 2018:

Facebook, Twitter reveal Russian meddling during 2016 election (The Washington Post)

Russian operatives used Facebook to publicize 129 phony event announcements during the 2016 presidential campaign, drawing the attention of nearly 340,000 users — many of whom said they were planning to attend — according to a company document released by the Senate Intelligence Committee Thursday.

It’s not possible to know how often people gathered in response to the sham announcements, but the numbers highlight how Russian operatives were successful in prompting Americans to express a willingness to act. In some cases, Russians allegedly working in an office building in St. Petersburg motivated at least some people to mobilize behind various causes, a striking accomplishment for a foreign influence campaign. McClatchy report says Robert Mueller’s investigation examining whether Kremlin funneled 2016 election funds through the gun group.

Robert Mueller’s investigation is probing whether a key Kremlin figure with close ties with the National Rifle Association may have illegally funneled money through the gun-rights group to influence the 2016 election, according to a new McClatchy report.

In November 2016, ThinkProgress examined the NRA’s strange relationship with the leadership of Right to Bear Arms, a Moscow-based pro-gun organization run by a twenty-something activist named Maria Butina and her close friend and boss, the deputy governor of the Russian central bank, Alexander Torshin. Senate GOP wary of ending Russia probes, despite pressure

Senate Republicans are showing no signs they will wrap up their Russia investigations soon despite pressure from the White House.

They’re also pushing back on the prospect that President Trump will fire special counsel Robert Mueller, which they fear would spark a backlash that could hurt the GOP in next fall’s midterm elections.

“Everybody knows that if Trump fired Mueller it would be interpreted by everybody who writes about this as evidence that he’s done something wrong,” said a strategist close to the Senate GOP leadership. Continue reading “Senate GOP wary of ending Russia probes, despite pressure”

Judiciary Dem Issues Dire Warning: GOP Is Plotting To Let Trump Fire Mueller

The following article by Eric Boehlert was posted on the Shareblue.com website December 13, 2017:

At a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Republicans who used to be for law and order lashed out at the DOJ and FBI and portrayed them as out of control agencies bent on destroying Trump.

It’s not just the loud mouths on Fox News who are peddling wild conspiracies as they lash out at supposedly dark forces on special counsel Robert Mueller’s team attacking the Trump White House.

An increasing number of Republicans are making it plain that any attempt by Trump to fire Mueller would be fine with them. Continue reading “Judiciary Dem Issues Dire Warning: GOP Is Plotting To Let Trump Fire Mueller”

Donald Trump Jr. faces a grilling today. Here are some big questions.

THE MORNING PLUM:

“Keep coming at me guys!!!” taunted Donald Trump Jr. last month, in response to those who preposterously continue trying to determine the truth about Russian sabotage of our election and Trump campaign collusion with it. Today, Trump Jr. faces closed-door questioning from the House Intelligence Committee, and hopefully, that will make some headway toward getting more answers. Some key areas of inquiry:

The Trump Tower meeting. Trump Jr. is expected to face questioning about his June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Kremlin-connected lawyer, NBC News reports. We have now learned from NBC’s reporting that the lawyer has claimed that at the meeting, which was also attended by son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign chair Paul Manafort, Trump Jr. asked the lawyer for information about illegal donations to the Clinton Foundation. It wasn’t forthcoming. Continue reading “Donald Trump Jr. faces a grilling today. Here are some big questions.”
