Sen. Jerry Newton (SD37) Update: September 19, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

As many of you have heard in the news Equifax, one of the three main credit reporting companies, recently experienced a major data breach.  The breach exposed personal information, including the Social Security numbers of about 143 million people in the United States.

Now scammers are attempting to take advantage of the breach.  If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be part of Equifax, do not believe them.  This is a total scam.  Equifax will not call you out of the blue.  These scammers will ask you to verify your personal information.  Do not give them any information and instead just hang up the phone.

If you wish to learn more about these scams, please visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website here.

Anoka-Hennepin Referendum

This November, voters in our community will have an opportunity to vote on two referendum questions that will affect both our school district and local taxpayers.

The first question asks for an increase to the general education revenue by $226 per pupil for the next decade which would amount to around $9.5 million per year. The other is a $249 million bond referendum that would go toward building new elementary schools in Blaine and Ramsey, as well as other renovations and classroom improvements.

You can visit the Anoka-Hennepin Schools website for more information here, including the impact it would have on your taxes, background information, and how to register to vote. There is also a local news story on the referendum here.

As you learn more about the two proposals on the ballot this November, I would encourage you to attend one of the upcoming community meetings on the referendum. The meetings are at Blaine High School on September 19 (tonight), Andover High School on September 20, Champlin Park High School on September 21 or Anoka High School on September 26.

However you decide to vote, it’s good to have the facts and understand the impact the referendum will have on your taxes, community and local schools.

Turn on the Lights Event for Homeless Veterans
Thursday, September 28
5 – 7 pm (program 6 pm)
4th Ave. N, vacant lot north of the Northstar station Anoka, MN

Minnesota has the most veteran suicides of any state. This is an unacceptable statistic. Together, we can make a difference.  Join us Thursday, September 28th and help save a life.

The City of Anoka is working to convert the 3 sturdy cottages at the former State Hospital on North 4th Ave in Anoka into housing for homeless veterans. They have sat dark and vacant for years. Let’s open the doors and “turn on the lights” so our homeless vets won’t have to spend another winter on the street.
