Sen. Jerry Newton (SD37) Update: October 11, 2017

Property Tax Payments Due October 15, 2017

I would just like to remind everyone that the last day to pay the second half of your real estate taxes is Monday, October 15th, unless part of the parcel is classified 2a agricultural land.  For more information on Property Taxes click here.

Minnesota Economic Forecast

Yesterday the state finance agency, Minnesota Management and Budget released their quarterly economic update which shows the state took in $66 million (1.4%) less than originally anticipated from July through September.  The tax collections for the state are down, but a more comprehensive report that takes spending patterns into account is due in late November.
You can find more information on the Economic Forecast here.

Real ID Update

Please see the statements below from Governor Mark Dayton’s Press Secretary, Sam Fettig, regarding Real ID.

“The State of Minnesota has been notified by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that all states that have applied for REAL ID extensions – including Minnesota – have been granted an additional grace period for implementation. This grace period will begin on October 11, 2017, and extend through January 22, 2018.”

“According to DHS, during this grace period, federal agencies will continue to accept driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by states with pending extensions. All Minnesotans should be assured that they can continue to board airplanes and access federal facilities, as Minnesota works to fully implement REAL ID and comply with federal requirements.”

Minnesotans, however, do have the option to purchase an “Enhanced Drivers License” (EDL), the document that meets and exceeds every aspect of the long-awaited Real ID.

The EDL will get you into bases, power plants, and domestic air travel, just like the Real ID. An EDL will get you across land and sea borders, including Canada and Mexico. A Real ID will not. The EDL will cost you $15 extra, but I would say that is money well spent.

More information on the Enhanced Drivers License can be foundhere.
