Rep. Laurie Pryor (HD48A) Update: March 5, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who attended our town hall meeting on Saturday. As usual, the conversation and questions were thoughtful and varied. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy weekend to spend some time with us.

The Eden Prairie News attended our town hall and published this story.

COVID-19 virus information

Amid all the legislative activity of the session is the underlying concern of how the COVID-19 virus will affect Minnesotans. The virus, which is disrupting commerce and daily life around the world, is of serious concern. As of this writing, there are no confirmed cases reported in Minnesota. On Wednesday, The Health and Human Services Finance Division received a presentation from Minnesota Department of Health officials. You can read the latest Minnesota Department of Health information here.

Paid Family Medical Leave approved by House

I was proud to vote yes tonight when the Minnesota House again passed the Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) bill to ensure greater stability when health issues or major life changes occur. The measure also passed last year, but it was blocked by the Senate. All Minnesotans should have time to care for themselves or a loved one, but right now many must choose between caring for family and collecting a paycheck. When employees have economic security, everyone benefits.

REAL ID

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, Minnesotans won’t be able to use their standard driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. Minnesotans will need a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID card, passport or passport card or another acceptable form of identification for federal purposes.

The Department of Public Safety is urging Minnesotans to submit applications no later than June 15, 2020 if you want to receive a REAL ID prior to Oct.1. You can save time by making sure you have everything needed before you visit a driver’s license office. Pre-apply online at realid.dps.mn.gov.

Education summit

On Friday, the Minnesota House of Representatives is hosting an all-day Education Symposium: ‘Bridging the Gap.’ Legislators will receive an overview of Minnesota’s education system, with a focus on solutions to eliminate racial disparities in education so children can reach their full potential. I’m interested to learn what has been accomplished, where we’re lacking as a state and strategies we can implement to close the gap.
