Rep. Heather Edelson (HD49A) Update: March 11, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a great weekend! A lot of legislation is moving through the committee process as the House is working to narrow the focus with our first deadline for bills on Friday.

A big congrats to the Edina Girls and Boys Hockey teams for their state championship victories over the month! Your hard work and dedication are tremendous accomplishments of which you should be proud.

Here’s a recap of what’s been going on at the Capitol:

Tobacco 21 Update

My Tobacco 21 bill, which would increase the age to purchase tobacco to 21, cleared another hurdle last week. The House Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Division voted the bill out of committee and has one more stop before it heads to the full House Floor for a vote.

Rotary License Plates

My bill to establish Rotary International special license plates recently received a public hearing in the Transportation and Finance Committee! It was an honor to be joined by fellow Rotarians who shared the important work our organization does here in Minnesota and worldwide.

Intern for a Day

Our Edina Intern for a Day program is going really well! Thank you to these amazing students for joined us at the Capitol last week.

Minnesota House Approves Equal Rights Amendment Bill

Minnesota women deserve equal rights in all aspects of life. All Minnesotans should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. House DFLers on Thursday, March 7 approved the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) ballot question to let Minnesotans decide whether or not to give everyone full equality under our Constitution. The Senate is now responsible for determining whether voters will have that opportunity in 2020.

The House DFL Majority has near gender balance, something we are very proud of. One day after the House voted to approve Equal Rights Amendment legislation, we celebrated with our fellow Minnesotans at the Capitol on March 8 for a rally in recognition of International Women’s Day.

Upcoming Town Hall

I hope you can join us for a Senate District 49 Town Hall Meeting this Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. at Edina City Hall. We’ll be taking questions and providing an update from the Capitol. All are welcome!

Stay in Touch

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or to let me know how I can be of assistance. I appreciate hearing from you!

It’s an honor to represent our community at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Heather Edelson
