Rep. Erin Koegel (HD37A) Update: March 6, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Another week is ending and amid the legislative committees, floor sessions, meetings and other events, there has been an underlying uncertainty of how and when the COVID-19 virus will affect Minnesotans.

The virus is disrupting commerce and daily life around the world, and, although there are no confirmed cases in Minnesota as of this writing, it is seriously concerning to everyone. On Wednesday, The Health and Human Services Finance Division received a presentation from Minnesota Department of Health officials.

Paid Family & Medical Leave approved in the House

On Thursday, I voted yes as the Minnesota House again passed the Paid Family & Medical Leave  bill to ensure greater stability when health issues or major life changes occur. All Minnesotans should have time to care for themselves or a loved one, but right now many must choose between caring for family and collecting a paycheck. We also passed the measure last year, but it was blocked by the Senate. When employees have economic security, everyone realizes the benefits.

Learning about the work of a DSP

Last week, I spent some time with Rise employees and Terri, a Direct Services Professional (DSP) to get a first-hand look at their work. I joined the team at RMS Surgical in Anoka for their workday. The Rise workers are competitively employed, and it was a great learning experience.

Women making a difference

I was honored to be included in the Women Making a Difference article  in our hometown newspaper. The topic this month was women in politics. It certainly helped to have a supportive workplace and amazing co-workers as I began my journey as a working mom. I want every working mom to have that support – another reason I voted in favor of HF5– Paid Family and Medical Leave.

Visitors to the Capitol

Anoka-Ramsey Community College President Kent Hanson and Vice-President Don Lewis advocated for a project in the bonding bill to modernize and expand nursing and business classrooms.
