Rep. Andrew Carlson (50B) – Legislative Update
I hope you are looking forward to spending some quality time with friends and family over the Thanksgiving Holiday. It is a busy time of year and it is easy to not realize how quickly the days go by. Here are a few updates from that Capitol that I wanted to pass along.
FREE STATE PARK FRIDAY
Gov. Dayton has announced “Free Park Friday” in Minnesota on Friday, November 23. Entrance fees to all of our state parks and recreation areas will be waived. Enjoy the beauty and diversity of Minnesota parks without a fee! Click here for more information.
LOW-INCOME VETERANS APPLY FOR HEATING ASSISTANCE
Low-income veterans are being encouraged to apply for help paying heating bills through the Energy Assistance Program (EAP). Click here for general information on the program.
CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING AWARENESS
As we prepare for the colder weather, it is important to be aware of the signs, symptoms and dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. About 500 people die annually from exposure to CO. For more information on how to stay safe, click here.
HIGH SCHOOL PAGE PROGRAM
The Minnesota House High School Page Program is currently accepting applicants for the 2019 legislative session. The program, available to high school juniors, is a unique educational opportunity for students to learn about state government first-hand. During their week at the Capitol, students will assist legislators during House Floor sessions; meet with individual legislators, constitutional officers, staffers, lobbyists, members of the media and others; and conduct a mock committee hearing to develop leadership skills, critically think about issues, and other activities to learn about Minnesota’s legislative process.
The deadline to apply is coming up fast on November 28, and applications require a short essay and letter of recommendation. If you know of any high school juniors that you think may find this opportunity interesting, please encourage them to apply. For more information and a link to the application, click here.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Andrew Carlson
State Representative
