Rep. Andrew Carlson (50B) – Legislative Update
With 5 weeks remaining until adjournment on May 21, the pace has picked up at the Capitol. We returned to work on Monday and had a busy week. Here’s an update from Saint Paul:
Governor Dayton’s Letter to Republican Majorities
On Monday, the Governor sent a letter to the Senate Majority Leader and the House Speaker to request bills be sent to his desk that have garnered bipartisan commitments since we began the legislative session. These bills relate to protecting the elderly and vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect, ensuring the safety of our school children and educators, addressing the opioid crisis, and stabilizing pensions of Minnesota workers.
You can read Governor Dayton’s letter here.
Budget Targets Released
Late yesterday, the House Majority released their spending blueprint, or “targets” for Minnesota.
Instead of investing in the things Minnesotans value, like expanding quality early childhood education and making college more affordable, they’ve indicated plans to continue prioritizing tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
This is in stark contrast to Governor Dayton’s supplemental budget proposal, which rolls back tax giveaways for corporations and the wealthy to fund tax cuts for working Minnesota families, invest in pre-K across the state, and more.
Bill Heard in Property Taxes Division
On Thursday, I presented my bill that provides public infrastructure improvements to Bloomington Central Station, located in the South Loop District. Improving this development will help our community build on economic growth, as the Blue Line LRT runs through Central Station to connect residents and Minnesotans to the 50-acre plot comprised of offices, residential units, retailers and a hotel.
Thank you to the City of Bloomington staff and McGough Construction for presenting their expert testimony on the legislation.
Property Tax Refund Reminder
As we approach the end of the 2018 tax season, I wanted to send a friendly reminder about the Renter’s Property Tax and Homestead Credit Refund. To see if you qualify, please take a look at the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s Instruction Guide. The forms can be accessed here and the filing deadline is August 15, 2018.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue also has information available on filing for free on their website. If you are curious to know if you qualify for free electronic filing products, or would like assistance from a free tax preparation site, visit this page.
Constituent Visits
This week, I met with Bloomington residents from St. Kate’s University, the Laborers Union and families advocating for additional funding for dyslexia programs in schools. Meeting with constituents is one of the best parts of my job, so thank you for coming to Saint Paul and making your voices heard.
Understandably, not everyone can come to the Capitol during the work week. Please know I’m always available via email or phone and I welcome your input on any matter of interest or concern.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Andrew Carlson
State Representative
