Public Safety Conference Committee to Discuss Gun Violence Prevention Tuesday

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – The joint House/Senate Public Safety and Judiciary Conference Committee will review a pair of House DFL proposals to prevent gun violence at a public hearing Tuesday. The hearing, chaired by Rep. Carlos Mariani (DFL – Saint Paul), will include a discussion of HF 8, a bill authored by Rep. Dave Pinto (DFL – Saint Paul) to require criminal background checks prior to gun sales, and HF 9, a measured authored by Rep. Ruth Richardson (DFL – Mendota Heights) which provides for Extreme Risk Protection Orders, allowing law enforcement to temporarily restrict access to a person’s firearms if a court determines they may be a threat to themselves or others.

Despite widespread public support for these initiatives, Senate Republicans have failed to hold a single public hearing on the topic of gun violence during the 2019 legislative session.

The meeting will be held at noon in Room 120 of the State Capitol. Livestreaming will be available here.
