Paulsen caters to the most extreme Republicans

To the Editor:

Erik Paulsen tried to explain why he’s supporting a new immigration overhaul bill in a letter to the Eden Prairie News. But he only proved his loyalty to congressional Republicans.

Despite his references to the legislation as a “compromise,” Democrats haven’t been involved in the negotiations. The compromise is just between establishment Republicans and the far-right wing of the party. That’s the reason the bill hasn’t been able to pass.

Instead of trying to reach out to the party that composes half of Congress, Erik Paulsen and his colleagues have been catering to the most extreme Republicans in government. If they were truly interested in writing a bill that Americans support, they would draw upon the ideas of congressional Democrats as well.

Erik Paulsen owes it to his constituents and his country to resolve the ongoing immigration crisis. Refugees and “dreamers,” all looking for a better life, are being left in the cold. This November, I plan on voting for a representative who has demonstrated their commitment to bipartisan solutions.
