WASHINGTON, DC — John Podesta, founder of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today on the attacks on the U.S. Capitol:

There can be no justification, no excuse, and no rationalization for the actions we saw today in our nation’s capital. The incitement of these extremists must end—immediately—and the enablers of this violence, including President Donald Trump, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), should no longer serve in their offices and should take the responsible action by resigning.

Just hours before violent insurrectionists forced their way into the Capitol, the president and his allies encouraged and rallied with extremists on the National Mall. There is no mistaking who bears responsibility for the disgraceful violence that took place: President Trump and his enablers both inside and outside of Congress.

Pelosi: Trump should be removed immediately

The Hill logo

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that Washington policymakers should act immediately to remove President Trump from office just two weeks before his term ends, citing “seditious” acts related to the president’s role in encouraging the assault on the U.S. Capitol a day earlier.

Pelosi joined Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y) in calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to oust Trump without delay.

Short of that, she said, the House will impeach him for a second time. Continue reading.

DFL Party Calls for Reps Hagedorn and Fischbach to be Expelled from Congress

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party called on the United States Congress to expel Representatives Jim Hagedorn and Michelle Fischbach for their oaths to support and defend the Constitution. DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“Just three days after Representatives Hagedorn and Fischbach swore oaths to defend the United States Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic, they violated those oaths by lending aid and comfort to an insurrectionist mob through their votes to overturn the results of a free and fair American election. Today, I am calling on Congressional leaders to begin the formal process of expelling Representatives Hagedorn and Fischbach from the House of Representatives.

“Yesterday’s mob breached the United States Capitol with the explicit goal of halting the certification of the 2020 presidential election and thwarting American democracy. It is unthinkable that any sitting members of Congress would share these aims, especially after that mob laid siege to the Capitol, yet Representatives Hagedorn and Fischbach have done exactly that and must face severe repercussions for their actions.

With brazen assault on election, Trump prompts critics to warn of a coup

Washington Post logo

During four years in office, President Trump has trampled political norms, attacked democratic institutions, sought to discredit government agencies, peddled baseless conspiracy theories and been impeached by the House.

Since his defeat in the November election, Trump’s critics have warned that his scorched-earth effort to invalidate the outcome amounts to a new level of danger: the first attempted coup d’etat in U.S. history to illegally maintain power.

The chorus of alarm grew this week after the disclosure that Trump bullied and threatened Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in an hour-long private phone call Saturday, during which the president demanded that Raffensperger find thousands of votes for Trump that do not exist. Pence declares Biden winner of the presidential election after Congress finally counts electoral votes

Washington Post logo

Vice President Pence declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner of the presidential election at the end of a violent and deadly day at the Capitol. Pence also announced that Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) had won the vice presidency, after the Senate and House rejected Trump loyalists’ challenges to Biden’s win in Pennsylvania and Congress finally counted the electoral votes.

Shortly thereafter, President Trump — who had defiantly told supporters at a rally that he would “never concede” — said in a statement that “there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.” Continue reading.

Minnesota’s Republican Members of Congress Partly to Blame for Violence in D.C.

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, Minnesota DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin condemned Minnesota’s Republican congressional delegation for fueling the baseless conspiracy theories around the 2020 election that are at the heart of the numerous violent protesters taking place on the steps of the United States Capitol.

“For months, Congressmen Stauber, Emmer, Hagedorn, and Fischbach have been fueling the fires of conspiracy and paranoia that now threaten to engulf our nation’s Capitol,” said DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin. “Each of Minnesota Republican members of Congress has worked to sow distrust in the American electoral process and each of Minnesota’s Republican members of Congress bears responsibility for the violence their actions have helped unleash.”

One month after the presidential election results came in, none of Minnesota’s Republican members of Congress were willing to declare President-elect Biden the rightful winner of that election, a sentiment shared by Congresswoman-elect Fischbach

In December, Congressmen Stauber, Emmer, and Hagedorn signed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to overturn the results of the 2020 elections. Stauber claimed, without offering any evidence, that he did so because there were “questions on the integrity of this presidential election” that needed to be addressed. Today, Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach said she would object to certifying the results of the presidential election.

Following numerous clashes with law enforcement, Republican-aligned protesters have breached the United States Capitol and are engaged in an armed standoff with law enforcement at the door to the House chamber. Members of Congress and staff have been asked to evacuate their offices and one member even received a bomb threat.

“The sustained attack on the integrity of our democracy by Representatives Fischbach, Stauber, Emmer, and Hagedorn has done serious harm to our ability to function as a nation and resolve our differences peacefully via the ballot box,” added Martin. “Today is one of the darkest days I have witnessed. Donald Trump poured the gasoline and Republican leaders lit the match that ignited this dark time in our history. I pray our nation can recover from the wounds inflicted on us by cowardly politicians who would sooner incite violence and sedition than stand up for American democracy and the rule of law.”

Live updates: D.C. National Guard will be activated as mobs breach U.S. Capitol; one person shot inside; D.C. mayor imposes curfew

Thousands of President Trump’s supporters are in Washington for rallies Wednesday to falsely assert that the presidential election was stolen from him. The demonstrations turned violent as many in attendance saw them as a last stand for Trump on the same day that Congress votes to certify that President-elect Joe Biden won the election.

Trump — who lost the popular and electoral college vote — continues to dispute the results, without evidence, and has encouraged his supporters to attend the rallies in the nation’s capital. He took the stage about noon to roaring crowds, claiming he had won the election.

At the U.S. Capitol, throngs of people pushed past police who were trying to block them from entering the building as lawmakers inside debated the certification of the presidential election. A mob was able to breach security and successfully enter the building. Continue reading.

The Hill logo

President Trump urged his supporters to “stay peaceful” while throngs of pro-Trump demonstrators flooded to the U.S. Capitol and breached the complex on Wednesday afternoon.

“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” Trump tweeted.

His message came after several lawmakers spoke out about the threats to the Capitol. U.S. Capitol Police locked down the building earlier Wednesday as demonstrators surrounded House and Senate office buildings. Continue reading.

McConnell rebukes effort to overturn Electoral College

The Hill logo

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned against supporting efforts to challenge the Electoral College results, the first time he’s spoken publicly against the Trump-endorsed plan by members of his caucus to throw out President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

McConnell’s remarks came at the start of the Senate’s first debate as part of what is expected to be an hours-long effort that will ultimately end in Congress affirming Biden’s win.

McConnell, speaking from the Senate floor, said that the allegations of fraud didn’t reach the standard for challenging the election results and warned of dramatic consequences if the effort were successful. Continue reading.

Vice President Mike Pence was taken from the Senate chamber after protesters entered the Capitol to protest the results of President-elect Joe Biden‘s win.

The House and Senate gaveled out of their debates on the Electoral College results as footage showed protesters breaching security and entering the Capitol.

The doors of the House chamber were locked for safety purposes. A member of the Capitol Police confirmed protesters had entered the building. Continue reading.
