DFL Logo

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Tomorrow, April 29th, will mark President Joe Biden’s 100th day in office. To commemorate this, the DFL Party will spend the week highlighting various accomplishments of the start of Biden’s presidency.

When President Biden took office, he did so in an economic recession brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and Donald Trump’s horrendous mismanagement of it. Jensen and other GOP Legislators will appear at a fundraiser this weekend to raise money for an Albert Lea woman who faced an active warrant for her arrest for violating COVID-19 restrictions.

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA  – This weekend, gubernatorial candidate Scott Jensen and other GOP legislators will speak at a fundraiser for Lisa Hanson, an Albert Lea wine bar owner who had an active warrant for her arrest and facesnine misdemeanor criminal counts, for violating COVID-19 restrictions. The fundraiser is to “support her legal fight”.

Scott Jensen has made a name for himself as a COVID conspiracy theorist, has spread misinformation about COVID-19posted anti-vaccine videos on social media, and was recently kicked off Tik-Tok for spreading COVID-19 misinformation.

DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Since long before he announced his campaign for governor, Scott Jensen has pushed dangerous conspiracy theories even going so far as accusing our frontline medical providers of inflating the COVID death rate for their financial gain – it is hardly a surprise that he is now fundraising to support someone whose claim to fame is refusing to recognize the danger of this pandemic. Republicans like Scott Jensen cannot claim to support law and order while encouraging Minnesotans to break the law and put their communities at risk.

Star Tribune logo

Losing one of eight House seats would trigger a complex realignment of the state’s congressional districts.

The U.S. Census Bureau is set to release population counts on Monday that will determine whether Minnesota will keep all eight of its seats in Congress.

Minnesota, which has grown more slowly than many other states, has been on the edge of losing one of its seats in the U.S. House for decades. The last time Minnesota lost representation in Congress was after the 1960 population count.

The numbers will be released at a 2 p.m. news conference. Continue reading.

House POCI Caucus Joins Call for Expedited Judiciary and Public Safety Conference Committee; Presses Senate to Act on Police Accountability

House DFL logo

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA — On Tuesday, April 27th, the Senate POCI Caucus sent a letter to Governor Walz and Legislative Leaders urging that the Public Safety and Judiciary conference committee begin it’s work immediately, that conferees be required to complete their work by the end of the week delivering the final bill that will be sent to the floor of both Houses by Monday, May 3rd, and be promptly sent to the Governor for his signature or veto. This is to ensure that these critical police reform decisions are given the time necessary to be discussed publicly and independently without being used as a bargaining chip in unrelated budget negotiations. The House POCI Caucus concurs with this call to action and released the following statement of support:

“In just two weeks since the killing of Daunte Wright, one week since the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, Senate Republicans are already sweeping police accountability under the rug. Our demands to transform our public safety and judicial system must not be ignored. Each day wasted is another day closer to another preventable tragedy. Governor Walz and the Legislative Leaders should not be fooled by the relative quiet. We are in the midst of a crisis, and our communities of color and Indigenous communities are demanding structural changes so we can live in a Minnesota where our lives are valued and protected. It is time that we learn from the loss of Daunte Wright, George Floyd, and countless others. We must pursue transformational police reform that will create a just Minnesota where everyone is treated fairly and safely.

Following the death of Daunte Wright, Senate Majority Leader Gazelka committed to holding hearings on police reform proposals then he changed his mind.

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Following the death of Daunte Wright, who was fatally shot by a police officer in Brooklyn Center, it was widely reported that Senate Majority Leader Gazelka was “committed to having hearings” on police reform. On Friday, Gazelka walked back this commitment, refusing to hold hearings on meaningful reform, instead, standing in the way of progress while Black Minnesotans suffer tragic outcomes at the hands of police officers.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are pushing for a bill that would impose harsher penalties against people arrested while protesting, make them ineligible for food stamps, and subject to loss of student financial aid and other government benefits.

DFL Party Statement on Minnesota Keeping All 8 Congressional

DFL Logo

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, following the release of block-level census data, it was revealed that Minnesota will keep all 8 of our representatives in the United States House. DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement in response:

“Today’s news is a testament to the people of Minnesota’s incredible commitment to civic engagement and democracy. As the state with both the highest census response rate in the nation at 75.1% and the highest voter turnout in the nation, Minnesotans should be proud of these results. We stepped up, fought hard, and retained a seat in Congress that most observers thought we would lose. I am thrilled that Minnesotans will retain their clout in Congress and say in the Electoral College.”

Speaker Hortman, Majority Leader Winkler issue statements about Census results, impact on redistricting

House DFL logo

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA — Today the U.S. Census Bureau released new data to determine each state’s number of congressional seats and Electoral College votes for the next decade. Minnesota’s number of congressional seats remains unchanged at eight. Data released today is not used to determine new boundaries for new legislative districts.

“Minnesota has a long history of good government and strong civic engagement. Thanks to Minnesotans’ excellent response to the census, Minnesota has retained eight Congressional districts. This is an important achievement for all of us. Congressional district allocation from the Census Bureau is an early and important step in Minnesota’s redistricting process. Minnesotans deserve an open and transparent redistricting process that results in a fair map,” said Speaker Hortman. “House Redistricting Chair Mary Murphy is well-qualified to take on this important work. She has the trust of Minnesotans in both parties and has an unassailable reputation for fairness. Now we anxiously await additional population data from the Census Bureau that is essential for the House Redistricting Committee to draw new districts.”

“Minnesotans expect their Legislature to draw fair maps and involve the public in drawing those maps,” said Majority Leader Ryan Winkler. “The census data released today makes clear how important that work is, and we are committed to district maps that all Minnesotans can trust and have confidence in.”

Minnesota sends billions more to Washington each year than it receives in federal aid

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dean Phillips (MN-03) released the following statement after the U.S. Census Bureau announced that Minnesota will maintain eight congressional seats in the 2021 reapportionment process:

“Minnesota’s high Census participation rates and population growth over the past decade means we’ll be keeping our representation, and clout, in Congress,” said Rep. Phillips. That’s outstanding news. Minnesotans contribute more than our fair share to Washington, and I’m renewing my mission to bring more support back to our communities. This issue affects all Minnesotans, and I invite people and representatives of all political perspectives to join me in redoubling our efforts to advocate for the federal investments we deserve – and need – in this Congress and beyond.”

In addition to determining the number of congressional districts within each state, the U.S. Census also impacts the distribution of trillions of dollars in federal funding for programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Head Start. Reduced federal funding would have a particularly large impact on Minnesota, which currently pays $1.8 billion more to the federal government each year than it receives in support.
