Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (HD48B) Update: May 10, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

There is just over one week remaining in the 2019 legislative session. House/Senate conference committees are currently meeting to resolve differences between each chamber’s version of the state budget. House and Senate leaders, along with Governor Walz, are working to reach an overall agreement. I’m hopeful we can reach a compromise, conclude our session on time, and deliver results which will improve the lives of Minnesotans.

E-12 Education

For my part, I’ve been closely following the Conference Committee charged with coming to a conclusion on the E-12 Education budget. All students deserve the opportunity to attend world-class schools no matter where they live, what their background may be, or what they may look like. Our House DFL Education budget includes much-needed investments in all students across the state, increases funding for special education, and includes funding for more school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and nurses. It also includes many components of my bill, the “Great Start for All Minnesota Children” Act with stronger investments in early childhood education. Continue reading “Rep. Rep. Laurie Pryor (HD48A) Update: May 9, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

This week I had the opportunity to visit with students from Carleton College. They had a keen interest in what we’re working on at the Legislature and I enjoyed showing them around the House Chamber.

I also want to offer congratulations to Walter Louis Barry for earning the honor of Eagle Scout. To earn his award, Walter completed a courtyard landscaping project at Minnetonka Middle School. I had the opportunity to present him with a House Resolution commemorating his achievement. Continue reading “Rep. Laurie Pryor (HD48A) Update: May 9, 2019”

Another successful civics class at the Shakopee Women’s Correctional Facility

Image
For the second consecutive year, I had the opportunity to teach a civics 101 course at the Shakopee Women’s Prison for their annual Chautauqua. It was inspiring to see how passionate these women were about exercising their civic duty. Of all the issues we discussed, there was only one that got a rousing ovation: a bill to require that all Minnesotans learn cursive writing. Continue reading “Sen. Appreciating the long days on the Senate Floor

Image

As the end of session approaches, more and more bills are being heard on the Senate Floor. Debates over the budget have often stretched into the night, and as the nights get longer I am constantly reminded of how fortunate we are to live in this great state. Far too few places in the world allow their citizens to have a discourse on how they govern themselves, and not a day goes by when I do not appreciate what we have here. Continue reading “Sen. Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (HD48B) Update: April 25, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

The Legislature returned to the State Capitol this week following our weeklong recess to observe Easter and Passover. It was a good chance to spend time in the community hearing from neighbors, and I want to thank everyone who attended our Town Hall Meeting last week. I know I can speak for Rep. Pryor and Sen. Cwodzinski in saying we all deeply appreciate the involvement and engagement from neighbors like you. Hearing your priorities makes us all more effective in our roles in Saint Paul.

Young Voters Revitalizing Our Democracy

The following commentary is by Sen. Steve Cwodzinski of Senate District 48, which covers parts of Chanhassen, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka:

The bedrock of a strong democracy is the act of voting. Each citizen has the awesome responsibility to cast their ballot to choose our leaders and to create a government for the people by the people. It is easy to not vote, but that only leads to an alienated, apathetic, uneducated and uninformed populace. A disengaged, disinterested, disconnected and dismissed populace is no way nearing the “More perfect union” our Framers presented to the world.

With so much talk of pending doom and devastation, I saw a glimmer of hope recently in The Star Tribune. In the 2018 elections, Minnesota voters between the ages of 18 and 29 had a turnout rate 43.7 percent, the best in the nation and a full 20 percent higher than the 2014 midterm elections. We need to listen to our young people, they are showing us the way and leading by example.

The rise in the youth turnout is a cause for celebration and is great news for Minnesota and the entire country. Millennials are not apathetic but are instead using their power and getting involved in finding solutions to the major issues we face. They are speaking and fighting on behalf of all of us on issues like gun violence prevention, climate change, the opioid crisis, and injustice. Rep. Laurie Pryor (HD48A) Update: April 17, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I just wanted to share another reminder about the Town Hall Meeting tonight hosted by Sen. Steve Cwodzinski, Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn and me at Eden Prairie High School. We’re in the middle of the Easter/Passover legislative recess, and when we return to the Capitol next week, our focus will be on the Minnesota Values Budget as we consider each of our finance bills on the House Floor. Before we begin this work, we’d love to hear directly from you about our own priorities and the issues you find most important.

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and everyone in the community is invited. If you’re unable to attend, please know that I welcome your feedback and input any time, so stay in touch with emails and phone calls. It’s an honor to represent you.Sincerely,Laurie Pryor
State Representative

Rep. Carlie Kotyza-WItthuhn (HD48A) Update: April 15, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been a whirlwind of activity at the State Capitol as the finance bills comprising our Minnesota Values Budget are assembled. This week the Legislature is in recess for the observance of the Easter/Passover holidays. When we return next week, there will be about a month remaining to complete our work. There’s a lot of work still to do and I’m committed to delivering results that make our state work better for everyone.
