Rep. Kristin Bahner (HD34B) Update: February 8, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

So much has happened in the past few weeks. We have a new President at the helm, a new congress and new state legislators here at home. While we all are united in believing violence is never the answer, we respect the need for every individual to have a voice. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don’t. And yet that is the core of our American values. The right to dissent at times, the ability to unite with one another and to engage in healthy debate – all of which make us stronger. I have always believed that. I know from talking to many of you, that people in our community across ideology or party lines, feel the same.

In a unified effort, House Democrats and Republicans of the Minnesota House of Representative joined together and passed House Resolution 1. A resolution condemning violence and violent rhetoric directed at the United States Capitol and state capitols, and affirming support for democracy, rule of law, and the certified results of our election. The resolution passed on a vote of 111-8.

Now is the time to reinvigorate the spirit that makes us who we are by reaffirming the right to free and fair elections, the will of the people to decide our leaders, and the grace we grant each other in the peaceful transfer of power. I believe that as Americans, we understand that neighbors caring for neighbors transcends any political party or ideology.

Rep. Kristin Bahner (HD34B) Update: January 22, 2021

Welcome back to session, much is new this year including many more opportunities for citizens to participate and view online hearings on a variety of topics.

This year I have the privilege to serve as the Vice Chair to the Human Services Committee. I will continue to work on the Health Services Committee as well. Both allow me the ability to exercise my keen interest in issues around access to affordable healthcare and prescription drugs and making healthcare work to provide better outcomes and preventative care for families. My passion is always on finding ways to strive toward the economic and physical health of our families. All too often, these issues need a good dose of common sense.

I will also serve on the Redistricting Committee this year and look forward to the hard work ahead to create fair and equitable outcomes for all Minnesotans across the state. Finally I will be on the State Government and Elections Committee. Some of you may recall I served as Vice Chair on Elections last year and continue to be a strong advocate for access to the vote and fair electoral process reforms. Work on the committee also allows me to continue my work on governmental reforms and technology, cyber and privacy concerns.

Rep. Kristin Bahner Update: December 28, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you and your family well. These are tough times and we are all tired. Like many of you with loved ones serving as first responders, healthcare professionals and those in long term care, it has been a long winding road of worry and heartache. With a vaccine on the horizon there is a ray of hope as the first doses reach Minnesota.

With this news, some of us have been blessed with relief that we still have loved ones with us, relief that we were spared the pain so many families have had to endure that were not so fortunate, relief that the ache to hug our loved ones like so many families will soon be over. It feels as if a weight has lifted, a heavy burden for so many families in my community. I feel a weighty responsibility to them all.

I remain immensely grateful to the incredible staff caring for our loved ones all these months. I have unwavering gratitude for the doctors, nurses, and staff in our hospitals and clinics, the researchers who develop the vaccine, health department workers coordinating its distribution, and the workers driving this sunshine to all the facilities that make this possible.

Gun safety group plans to spend $1M to flip Minnesota Senate

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A major gun control group with ties to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday it plans to spend at least $1 million to try to flip the Minnesota Senate to Democratic control and keep the Minnesota House in the hands of lawmakers who back its positions.

The Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund has targeted the state Senate because Republicans hold just a three-vote majority there. But GOP senators have blocked legislation supported by the Democratic-controlled House and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz for universal background checks on gun sales and a “red flag law” that would allow courts to temporarily confiscate guns from people judged to be an imminent threat to themselves or others.

The fund and an affiliated group, Moms Demand Action, are focusing on 12 Senate districts now held by Republicans, mostly in the Twin Cities suburbs, Rochester and St. Cloud. They’re also targeting five GOP-held House districts while trying to defend a dozen legislative seats held by supporters. Their first ad attacks GOP lawmakers for refusing to consider the two gun control bills. Continue reading.

Rep. Zack Stephenson (HD36A) Update: April 3, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you and yours well.

On Sunday, Governor Walz will give his State of the State address remotely from his residence. While this is unusual, I appreciate he’s keeping up with the tradition to provide an update to Minnesotans now, especially under these challenging circumstances with COVID-19. You can stream it on his YouTube Channel or watch on any local news station.

SOTSToday, the Governor launched a dashboard that serves as a central hub for Minnesotans to track confirmed cases by county, and provides the latest data on supplies, like ventilators and personal protective equipment. You can check it out here.

Unemployment Update

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has been working hard to quickly and effectively process thousands of unemployment insurance applications for folks in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, DEED has processed more unemployment applications over the past two weeks than they have in the past two years.
UI Days

To assist in this process, DEED has now designated certain days for Minnesotans who are applying for Unemployment Insurance benefits for the first time based on the last digit of their social security number. With applications coming in at an unmatched pace, this will ensure displaced workers can get faster, more effective services and the benefits they are depending on. To enroll or find more information, visit www.uimn.org.

New Guide for Small Business Owners

Several state and federal programs have been created to help small businesses affected by COVID-19. Different programs make sense for different businesses, so the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has posted a guide that details all of the assistance available in one spot. This information can help small businesses determine which programs might work for them, including the ones I authored that were included in the emergency COVID-19 aid package. Click here to view the guide.

Child Care Grants Available

Governor Walz this week announced that the application process for emergency grants for child care providers impacted by COVID-19 is open. This funding was a part of the comprehensive COVID-19 emergency package of bills we passed last week. There are approximately 420,000 children under the age of 12 who live in a household of an essential worker within a critical sector. Of these, the state estimates that during this peacetime emergency, about 270,000 children will need care and approximately 120,000 are likely to need care from licensed child care settings. Visit this webpage to learn more about grant availability

Rep. Bahner reflects on 1st year in Legislature

Wow, I get to work here’

With one year under her belt, Rep. Kristin Bahner (DFL-Maple Grove) of District 34B takes some time to reflect back on her first year in Minnesota congress and what she hopes to accomplish during this next legislative session.

“I am one of those passionate folks who, I think, I probably believed that I always would serve,” Rep. Bahner said.

She said she went down the path of Information Technology for 20 years, but did not see where the path to serve politically was.

Situation in the Minnesota Senate

Minnesota is the only state legislature in the country. Like the GOP controlled U.S. Senate, our Minnesota Senate Speaker is blocking bills from being heard.

Here are the issues that are being stonewalled (Sen. Gazelka is beginning to talk about allowing the gun safety bills to be heard):

Tuesday at 11: News conference announcing new comprehensive plan to make prescription drugs affordable and accessible for Minnesotans

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTAOn Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. in Capitol Room B971, DFL lawmakers and the parents of Alec Smith are announcing a new comprehensive plan to make prescription drugs affordable and accessible for all Minnesotans. Legislators and advocates rally to support “great start” bills

SAINT PAUL, Minn.—Today at the Capitol, a bipartisan, bicameral group of legislators, joined by advocates for health care, mental health, and early childhood, announced support for prenatal care and home visiting proposals, initiatives that would improve the wellbeing of parents and children at the beginning of life. The announcement immediately followed a legislative hearing on the home visiting proposal.

“Prenatal care and home visiting services are part of a broader legislative effort to help make sure that every child gets a great start in life,” said Rep. Dave Pinto (DFL—St. Paul), chair of the House Early Childhood Finance & Policy Division. “The House, Senate, and Governor are all prioritizing early care and learning. This is the session to do right by the youngest Minnesotans.”

While Minnesota leads the nation in many aspects of health care, too many African-American and American Indian women die from pregnancy-related causes. Black and Native women are three to four times more likely to die during pregnancy compared to their white counterparts, and their infants are more than twice as likely to die as white infants. Rep. Kelly Morrison (DFL—Deephaven) and Sen. Jim Abeler (R—Anoka) have introduced companion bills, HF 909and SF 855, to expand access and utilization of prenatal care and decrease racial and ethnic disparities.
