Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office to Participate in the United States Attorney Twin Cities Violent Crime Task Force

We are proud to partner with local, state and federal law enforcement in a new Violent Crimes Task Force announced today to stop the dramatic increase in violence in the Twin Cities.

We will provide intelligence expertise to this critical cause, helping the task force pinpoint the people responsible and offering the best ways to disrupt them.

As always, our goal is to make the streets safer in a way that builds trust between law enforcement and the community.

We must all work together to put an end to the violence.

Hennepin County Board declares racism a public health crisis

The board voted to declare racism a public health crisis in Hennepin County.

Due to racism, Black, Indigenous and people of color in Hennepin County statistically have poorer educational outcomes, earn less, and are less likely to own homes or have access to quality health care and jobs than White people. These disparities have lifelong impacts, including higher disease rates, and, as we’re seeing now, higher rates of COVID-19.

Naming racism as a systemic cause to disparities is key to continue to move this work forward.

Message from Mayor Busse regarding fire station incident

Dear Community,

I regret to inform you about some horrible news regarding an incident at one of the City’s fire stations.

A piece of rope tied into what appears to be a crude noose was discovered in the gear locker of a Black firefighter at a Bloomington fire station on June 15. The incident was reported to Fire Department leadership on June 23. The City of Bloomington has asked the FBI to investigate the matter.

I am disgusted, angry, and embarrassed by this cowardly act. To be clear, this incident is very serious and is being dealt with aggressively. The City of Bloomington, including the Fire Department, is committed to being a safe and respectful place to work for all employees. We will not tolerate or, in any way, condone such behavior. The City has a strict workplace policy that forbids all types of discriminatory and disrespectful behavior. Continue reading.

Minnesota House Transportation Finance Committee Holds Remote Hearing

House DFL logoSAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, the Minnesota House Transportation Finance Committee held a remote hearing to discuss proposed legislation to address various transportation-oriented topics that are related to the COVID-19 disease. Provisions included extending out-of-state commercial driver’s licenses, extending some vehicle registrations, providing for the issuing commercial driver’s licenses, requiring agency reports to the legislature, and specifying allowable uses of federal aid.

“Minnesotans are encountering challenging times with disruptions to their daily lives during the COVID-19 pandemic,” remarked Rep. Frank Hornstein (DFL-Minneapolis) Chair of the Transportation Finance Committee. “We’re working on bipartisan basis to address these difficulties, especially with vehicle registrations and driver’s licenses, and we’re doing so in a way that ensures the public has the opportunity to weigh in.”

“It’s important that an adaptive and functioning government continues during this pandemic, and updating our requirements in relation to transportation needs to be a part of that,” said Rep. Brad Tabke (DFL – Shakopee) Vice Chair of the Transportation Finance Committee and author of the proposed language. “Things are quickly changing for Minnesotans, and this proposed legislation would provide clarity when it comes to commercial driver’s licenses and vehicle registration, while also ensuring the legislature remains informed.”

Testimony was given by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Council, and Sam Rockwell of Move Minnesota. The committee advanced the legislation to the Ways and Means Committee.

Supporting documents can be found on the committee’s website, and a video recording of the hearing can be found on the House Public Information’s YouTube channel.

Local Elections Matter

Local Elections Matter.

So many Americans are looking forward to the 2020 elections because we’re sick and tired of Donald Trump’s blatant corruption and his attacks on our health care, our values, and the rule of law.

However, if you want to stand up for good governance and our progressive values, there are elections coming up in just a few weeks that are incredibly important: the 2019 local elections.

Voters all over our state have a chance to elect mayors, school board members, city councilors, and county commissioners. These positions have an incredible impact on our communities and our lives. Continue reading “Local Elections Matter”

Cathy is a a Tireless organizer willing to do whatever it takes to elect DFLers and turn her district blue.

Rick Nelson Volunteer of the Year Award — Sharon Borine, former Chair of SD48 DFL and Director for CD3 DFL.  Sharon is truly a foundational organizer. She’s found helping out behind the scenes at everything CD3 and SD48 DFL.  Whether it’s credentials preparation for caucuses, organizing and running a silent auction, picking up delivering and setting up for events, you can count on Sharon to be there organizing and working.  She truly epitomizes Rick’s spirit:  a true rock that does whatever needs to be done.

Sen. Linda Scheid Elected Official of the Year — Senator Chris Eaton, SD40.  Sen. Eaton came to office in a special election in 2011 upon the passing of Sen. Scheid. As a RN, Sen. Eaton has spent her time in the Minnesota Senate advocating tirelessly for the betterment of our health care system and care of our communities whether it’s protecting our environment, schools or health care systems. Sen. Eaton has passionately advocate for years to address the ravages that addiction takes on our society. This issue is personal too Sen. Eaton with the loss of her daughter. This year saw a bill she strongly advocated fro to battle opioid addiction be signed into law by Gov. Walz. We recognize Sen. Eaton for her tireless work on our behalf and stand with her as she continues to advocate for stronger communities.

New Volunteer of the Year — Jimmy Tarpey, SD44. Jimmy is new to political field politics in our area having first knocked doors with Rep. Ginny Klevorn. But, he was quick to volunteer and eager to learn. That lead to him become Co-Field Director of Rep. Klevorn’s 2018 campaign. He has served with SD44 DFL as Field Director of our “We Win with Data” task force, and has personally knocked over 700 doors since July, 1, 2019. Unfortunately for SD44 DFL, he will be moving out of that district, but has promised to continue to be part of the DFL Team and has already reached out to party officials in his new senate district.

This year, we’re honored to announce our keynote speaker for this year’s event is our Congressional Representative Dean Phillips.
