Jobs and Energy Conference Committee Hears Public Testimony on Climate Change

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA — The joint House/Senate Conference Committee tasked with developing a compromise state Jobs and Energy budget held their second public hearing this afternoon. The committee focused on energy provisions. Testifiers included nationally-respected meteorologist Paul Douglas, who spoke about how climate change is impacting Minnesota.

“As one of the fastest-warming states in the country, Minnesota is already experiencing the impacts of climate change,” said Rep. Jean Wagenius (DFL – Minneapolis). “Scientists have told us that we need to sharply reduce carbon emissions in the next twelve years to head off catastrophic consequences. Minnesotans expect us to heed these warnings and take action to protect our climate.”

further consequences of climate change. It sets Minnesota on a path to 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2050, while ensuring that electricity is reliable and affordable. It also provides new opportunities for utility customers to switch to clean energy sources.

The Senate Republican plan fails to adequately address the threat of climate change. Rather than growing Minnesota’s clean energy economy, it keeps Minnesota dependent on fossil fuels. That discourages job creation and innovation that would benefit Minnesotans and establish our state as a clean energy leader.
