My colleague Caitlin Owens noticed a trend as she looked around at Republicans’ midterm campaigns: Many of them keep promising that if they win, they will do unpopular things — like repeal the Affordable Care Act or cut Medicare. The reason for this, especially for Republicans, is that this year isn’t about persuading or winning over swing voters. It’s about turning out the base. And the base still wants ACA repeal.

  • “It’s all about the base, because as far as I can tell, they’ve lost the independents, there’s no one left to woo,” said conservative economist Doug Holtz-Eakin, a former campaign aide to late Sen. John McCain. Axios

Voters in Hennepin County have a chance to make political history this year: Irene Folstrom, first county commissioner of color; Ilhan Omar, first Somali-American elected to Congress; Peggy Flanagan, first Native American lt. governor and highest ranking woman in the U.S. to hold office; and Mohamud Noor, the first Somali-American male to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives. #BeAVoter

Poll from Protect our Care: 60 percent of voters in MN02 and MN03 say health care is either the top issue or very important this election season. What’s more, a vast majority of voters in MN02 and MN03 are deeply concerned about Congressman Lewis and Congressman Paulsen’s work to repeal health care. Concerns over health care are driving head-to-head results that show Congressman Paulsen trailing 52-39 percent and Congressman Lewis trailing 48-45 percent.

More than 12,000 migrant children are now in government shelters, compared with 2,400 in May 2017. “[T]housands of immigrant families are experiencing … increasing hurdles … to take custody of sons, daughters and relatives who crossed the border on their own,” AP’s Gisela Salomon and Claudia Torrens report:

  • “The Trump administration has imposed more stringent rules and vetting.”
  • “The requirements include the submission of fingerprints by all adults in the household where a migrant child will live.”
  • “Many of the parents … are poor and … share homes with others who are unrelated or in the country illegally. Many of those roommates have been reluctant to submit their fingerprints.” Axios
