Minnesota Governor’s have a tradition of breaking late. Both Mike Hatch and Roger Moe were ahead in polls but ended up losing to Tim Pawlenty. Skip Humphrey was ahead too, and then came Jesse Ventura. That said, the challenge for Jeff Johnson after a series of polls showing him trailing Tim Walz is the energy it can take from his campaign, and the challenge that fundraising can become. The key region of the poll that shows the DFLers calculus in choosing Walz may be smart is his strength in Southern Minnesota, part of the state that Johnson should be showing stronger. However, Walz’s representation in Congress is garnering him strength here. There’s a lot time left in this race – and on some of the key issues Johnson is more aligned with voters. Something that could give him an a last minute surge among undecideds. Meanwhile, Walz campaign has been smart and proactive – something it can’t rest on in the final seven weeks. morning take

He spoke to reporters on Air Force One, held a pair of fundraisers and was interviewed by three local reporters.
