As of Oct. 25, at least 372,731 absentee ballots have been requested by Minnesota voters. 249,909 have been accepted by election officials. The rate of absentee ballot requests is an increase of 145 percent over the same time in the 2014. The rate of accepted ballots is an increase of 203 percent over the same time in 2014. $1,000 per point. That’s what a DFL operative told me the cost is these days to buy ad time on broadcast TV. You need at least 1,000 gross ratings points per week to get any saturation, and you really need 2,000 to do it right. So do the math: That’s $1M to air an ad, but really you ought to spend $2M. Per week. The cause: All the outside money flowing in for the four competitive House districts that we talked about yesterday. They don’t get any discount, so they drive up the price for state level candidates, who also pay market rates. (Federal candidates get a big discount.) Even digital platforms like Pandora are sold out, this source told me. This makes it all that much harder for state-level candidates. Which is why they have to be creative.
