“Tonight we witnessed a President of the United States who instead of finding ways to bring this country together during a time of unprecedented unease and anxiety has doubled down on his politics of destruction. Demeaning political rivals, attacking the media, gross vulgarity, an immaturity that would make my two teenage sons look like reasoned adults. The one thing I would agree with what Donald Trump said tonight is that clearly something is a little different up there.
“This is all part of Trump’s strategy to avoid talking about his failed record as President and the broken promises he made to Minnesotans and Americans. While Trump and Republicans are busy finding their next victim to attack, the Minnesota DFL is busy communicating with voters. We’re talking to voters at their doors and on the phones about Donald Trump’s record of broken promises and failed policies. Trump has not delivered on making health care and prescription drugs less expensive, his trade war has devastated our farmers and communities throughout Greater Minnesota, and his tax plan shortchanges middle-class families and small businesses. That’s not a winning record for the people of Minnesota.
“Tonight Donald Trump’s rally was all about Donald Trump , just like his Presidency. No talk about policy, no talk about his vision for America, no talk about what he would do to improve the lives of Americans. Just a bunch of attacks, deflection, and stroking the egos of the blindly-loyal Republican elected officials and candidates who have clearly put their oath to Trump ahead of the oath they took to protect and defend the constitution of the United States of America. To paraphrase the late great Molly Ivins: Trump’s speech tonight was much better in the original German.
“Minnesota voters care about kitchen table issues, and that’s where we can beat Donald Trump. Focusing not just on Trump’s failures but also our vision for a better future is how we get our people motivated to show up at the polls and vote for us. It’s what we’ve always done and it’s why we have that long unbeaten streak of voting for Democrats for President and why a Republican hasn’t won statewide office here since 2006.
“We know he’s personally obsessed with flipping our state, and that his team plans on pouring tens of millions of dollars into Minnesota over the next year and change to make that happen. In my time in Minnesota politics these past 20 plus years I have never seen an investment this robust and deep by a Republican presidential candidate. When Trump says he is trying to win Minnesota, this time he’s not lying.
“That said, I’m confident that Minnesota will stay blue. The Minnesota DFL has not lost a statewide election since 2006 and huge pockets of voters who supported Donald Trump in 2016 have come back to the DFL and to our positive message of improving people’s lives. Our Party is more organized throughout the state, we are not resting on our laurels and are prepared to fight Trump in every Zip Code throughout Minnesota. Minnesota has the longest streak of any state in the nation in voting for
