Cruz: “I Did My Duty” By Trying To Void Election Result

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) claims that he was doing his “duty” when he objected to certified election results showing Joe Biden had been elected president, as part of an attempt to overturn the election the Republican Party lost.

Cruz appeared on the syndicated “Joe Pags Show” and was asked by the host if he felt he had done “something wrong” by objecting to the certification of voting results on Jan. 6.

“I did my duty,” Cruz replied, adding, “I stood up and fought for the men and women of Texas, for 29 million Texans.” Continue reading.

Justice watchdog to probe whether officials sought to interfere with election

The Hill logo

The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) internal watchdog announced Monday that it would investigate whether any of the agency’s officials “engaged in an improper attempt to have DOJ seek to alter the outcome” of the 2020 election.

In a brief statement, the DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG) announced that the probe would encompass current and former agency officials.

“The investigation will encompass all relevant allegations that may arise that are within the scope of the OIG’s jurisdiction,” Michael Horowitz, the department’s inspector general, said in the statement. “The OIG has jurisdiction to investigate allegations concerning the conduct of former and current DOJ employees. The OIG’s jurisdiction does not extend to allegations against other government officials.” Continue reading.

Dominion files $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani

Axios logo

Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuitagainst Rudy Giuliani on Monday seeking $1.3 billion in damages for his “demonstrably false” allegations about the company’s voting machines.

Why it matters: Giuliani led former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the election and spread the baseless conspiracy theory that Dominion’s voting machines flipped votes from Trump to Joe Biden.

  • Another one of Trump’s allies, Sidney Powell, is also facing a defamation lawsuit for falsely claiming that Dominion was part of an international communist plot to rig the election. Continue reading.

Sen. McCain’s Widow, Arizona Governor Shrug Off GOP Censure

Top Arizona Republican party officials are still upset with lawmakers for not objecting to presidential election results. But their criticisms are being met with yawns from their targets.

Over the weekend, the Arizona state GOP censured three top leaders of their own party: Governor Doug Ducey, former Sen. Jeff Flake and Cindy McCain – the widow of late Sen. John McCain.

The state party organization censured Sen. Flake because he did not object to the electoral votes on January 6, the same day supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol. McCain, a businesswoman, was censured for supporting what they called “leftist causes” after endorsing President Joe Biden. Continue reading.

Calls mount for Republican Rep. Scott Perry to resign for reported role in effort to overturn Georgia election

Calls are mounting for U.S. Rep. Scott Perry to resign after a report late Saturday exposed his “significant role” in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Perry, a Republican from York County, connected President Donald Trump with a Justice Department official to try to remove the acting U.S. attorney general from his post and pressure Georgia lawmakers to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential contest, according to The New York Times

The congressman did not respond to questions from The Times before publication. He also did not immediately respond to questions from the USA TODAY Network on Saturday night. Continue reading.

‘You’re saying we’re all liars!’ Rand Paul melts down on ABC when confronted with election ‘lies’

AlterNet logo

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) became annoyed with an ABC host on Sunday over the suggestion that former President Donald Trump’s defenders are all “liars” about the results of the 2020 election.

“This election was not stolen,” ABC host Georgia Stephanopoulos began his interview with Paul by noting. “Do you accept that fact?”

Paul, however, refused to respond with a straight answer.

“The debate over whether or not there’s fraud should occur,” Paul opined. “But, yes, were there people who voted twice? Were there dead people, illegal aliens who voted? Yes. And we should get to the bottom of it.” Continue reading.

Trump and Justice Dept. Lawyer Said to Have Plotted to Oust Acting Attorney General

New York Times logo

Trying to find another avenue to push his baseless election claims, Donald Trump considered installing a loyalist.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department’s top leaders listened in stunned silence this month: One of their peers, they were told, had devised a plan with President Donald J. Trump to oust Jeffrey A. Rosen as acting attorney general and wield the department’s power to force Georgia state lawmakers to overturn its presidential election results.

The unassuming lawyer who worked on the plan, Jeffrey Clark, had been devising ways to cast doubt on the election results and to bolster Mr. Trump’s continuing legal battles and the pressure on Georgia politicians. Because Mr. Rosen had refused the president’s entreaties to carry out those plans, Mr. Trump was about to decide whether to fire Mr. Rosen and replace him with Mr. Clark.

The department officials, convened on a conference call, then asked each other: What will you do if Mr. Rosen is dismissed? Continue reading.

Democrats file ethics complaints against Hawley and Cruz, but action unlikely

Secretive ethics committee last took public action in 2018

Seven Democratic senators are asking the chamber’s ethics committee to investigate Sens. Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley for objecting to the Electoral College certification of President Joe Biden’s victory on Jan. 6, a day in which a violent pro-Trump group of insurrectionists invaded the Capitol.

It is doubtful that the committee, which took no disciplinary actions in 2019 — the most recent year for which an annual report is available — and dismissed almost all of the 251 complaints it received that year, will venture into a complaint that is light on alleged ethics violations.

Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Tina Smith of Minnesota, with five of their colleagues, wrote to Chairman Chris Coons, D-Del., and Vice Chairman James Lankford, R-Okla., alleging that Hawley and Cruz “lent legitimacy to the mob’s cause and made future violence more likely.” Continue reading.

Republicans call for unity but won’t acknowledge Biden won fairly

Washington Post logo

The call for unity came from one of President Trump’s most loyal supporters in Congress, nearly a week after a pro-Trump mob rampaged the U.S. Capitol in a riot that left five people dead.

“What happened at the Capitol on January 6 was as wrong as wrong can be,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told colleagues during a virtual committee meeting about Democrats’ demands that Trump be removed from office. Now was the time for “healing,” and in Jordan’s opinion, that meant allowing the president to finish out his term.

The committee chairman, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), pressed him on one point. Hadn’t Jordan and more than 140 other Republicans given oxygen to the false conspiracy theory pushed by Trump that motivated the Capitol rioters — that the election had somehow been stolen — when they had voted to object to certifying the electoral college results? DFL Party Leaders Call on Republicans to Correct Election-Related Misinformation Ahead of Biden Inauguration

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, DFL Party leaders held a press conference calling on Minnesota Republican leaders to correct the election-related disinformation they have spread and say to their base, with no hedging or qualifying, that the 2020 elections were free and fair and that Joe Biden is the President-elect.

A video of the press conference is available here.

“It is imperative that Minnesota Republicans tell their base the truth: the 2020 elections were not stolen, there was not widespread voter fraud, and Joe Biden is the legitimate President-elect of the United States of America,” said Ken Martin, Chairman of the Minnesota DFL Party. “We cannot stand idly by and allow threats of violence to consume our political system. We are better than this. Republican leaders must speak out now, not just to denounce violence but to repudiate the lies fueling that violence.”
